Dodge Cummins inj pump

Bought a 98 Dodge w/Cummins 24 valve a little over a year ago. It has in the area of 300,000 miles. Speedo didn't work for a couple of years so it's an educated guess. Fuel gauge sender didn't work for a year before I bought it and it was run out of fuel several times.

Took it to a reputable repair shop a week ago to have the sender replaced. They replaced it, called me to say it was done, so I got it, started it up and took off but the computer had gone into the 'limp home' mode, wouldn't go above about 1000 RPM's, so I drove it around the block and back to the shop. They said they test drove it a few miles after they got it together and it ran fine.

He plugged his hand-held into it and if I remember right it said something about pump timing. He also checked the lift pump pressure. Next morn after he had made a few calls he said the inj pump was bad. I kind of suspect running it out of fuel a few times accelerated the wear a bit. What do you think? It had a re-built pump already. He told me what a re-built pump costs and they sure don't give them away!Jim

Mine did that, when I took it to my preferred shop they told me it was new pump time. I ended up taking it to the dealer where they had a good diesel guy. He said the RPM drivers in the software were in conflict with the overdrive drivers??? and turned them off since I had a manual transmission. Lasted almost a year before the pump finally went toast. New pump and labor was 1365 for me.

What year is your's. They quoted me double that amount.Don't know if I should say "GRRR!" or "OUCH".

Go to www.turbodieselregister.com and click on discussion forums, slide over to the next column on the right, go down to second generation, and click on 24valve engine. There is a thread titled "Whats happened to the epedemic of VP-44
issues". You can read all of these posts as a guest. There were several lift pump and vp-44
injection pump updates that they cover as well
as a few pump shop names.

Good luck.

Mel, thanks for the info about the website. They mentioned something about the lift pump updates and the advance sleeve failing.

When the new sender/tank pump was ordered an update came with it including some wiring with a new relay. They had to remove the starter to do the update so I assume it had something to do with the lift pump, gleaning from what I read on the website. The pump shop my mechanic talked to is very reputable and has been around a long time. I've had this shop do pump work for me before. Dodge dealers send new pumps to this shop to have improvements done to them so maybe it's worth the money? I sure hope so. Jim

I found dealers want around $2400 for reman pump , cummins dealer or dodge dealer . same price . Local rebuilder sell them to me for $1000-1100. Updated INTANK lift pump from dodge avail . Also you can put a low pressure warning light kit on . LED light on dash lets you know if pressure is dangerously low so you can shut it down before you trash inj pump . Ps I did not learn all this in the "Pupm class " lol
