Wisconsin V4 engine

Today we got a trencher at a auction and it has a V4 wisconsin that somone removed for some reason. Is there anything I should look for on this engine? Any common problems? Ive never worked on one before so I dont know anything about them.

In bobcats they tend to suck in a lot of dirty air. use a air compresser to blow out the air cooled fins every few days. They seemed to need overhauls more often than other types of engines. maybe because of the dirty air.

Good engines. We have several and like old geezer says, keep them clean.

Also, keep all covers in place to aid in cooling. When they overheat, heads warp.

Northland Farm Systems has/can get parts.507-451-3131 ask for Paul in parts.

They have a reputation for hard starting. This is because of leakey valves. Bad valves are because of over heating. Like others are saying keep them clean, they are AIR cooled.

I agree with Coloken. We had one on a baler once, and we probably spent as much time trying to get it started as we did actually baling with it.

As I recall, we only had it a year or two.

Have heard this all my life about air cooled engines, keep air ways clean and run them up against the govener all the time, proper air flow is at this speed, anything less makes heat.

If you should happen to grind the valves, do yourself a favor and take some paper and plug the oil drain holes. Those darned valve keepers have a way of falling down into the oil pan. Been there.

Mags are another sore spot- Dad had one on a baler when I was a kid, spent half the summer trying to get the mag to work right. Maybe the newer ones have switched to distributor (I hope)- don't know.

I"m a big advocate in a name brand synthetic oil in these engines. You"ve got to remember that the only cooling that these engines have is air and oil. And both of these get HOT!
