Been using various versions of Norton Antivirus for years with excellent success. I've only had problems a couple of times, and non in last few years. Knock on wood now that I've said that!

I had to get rid of AVG last week. It was into everything. Took forever to open WORD, etc, "checking for virus". Modem would not connect. Deleted all of AVG and works great. My internet supplier catches all the viruses, etc. Periodically have to view/delete. AVG never said it caught anything.

I got a virus called 360 even useing free AVG. However I clicked on a booby trapped website , it didn't search me out. Dell's tech's removed it and recommended I buy a program called Kasparsky , 2 years for $85....I'll find out tomorrow if it works !!

Norton and Firefox.....havent had a problem in 4 years since I installed them.

I have been running Linux at home for over ten years. There is no anti-virus software for Linux because it isn't needed. And it wouldn't be needed on Windows, except that Microsoft insists on convenience over security.

I also have been experiencing problems with AVG.
Might look into the Avast. I got rid of Norton when I went with AVG. Norton is a memory hog. I'll never go back to it.

Just got rid of AVG. Computer runs twice as fast.
Ran Malwarebytes then downloaded Comodo. Turn off system restore before running Mal.

Actually there are antivirus software packages for linux but, you are correct in that, they are not needed. Safety through obscurity maybe. I have to laugh at the windows problems, each time a new "crisis' arrives.

I found it doing a quick Google search. There is a free version for home use. Have not yet downloaded it.

I think it was version 8 AVG was pretty much "it" for me. A friend of mine and I've converted to Linux. I used Linux Mint for awhile, now use Ubuntu.

NO virus program needed. It's all free

I run Fedora, out of habit, I suppose. I started out with Red Hat 4.1, and just stuck with it. I also keep a copy of Knoppix handy to rescue trashed Windows machines.

Safety through obscurity? Hardly. There's a lot of Linux boxes hooked directly to broadband connections that the bad guys would love to compromise. But it is so much easier to crack the non-existent security on Windows boxes that they don't bother with Linux.

Computer guy in the local paper says Avast is now better than AVG, but I've never had a problem with AVG

I have used nearly all the free ones. I now use, A-squared free, (Google it)which someone recommended here and Avast. I like A-squared free best. Hope this helps. NorminN.B.
