My old service truck '95 3500HD GMC lost high gear on the way back from a job last week. I've got it rebuilt and back in but was wondering about lubrication needs for it.

It had some weight of gear lube in it but has always (since I've had it) felt a little stiff to me changing gears, in particular in cold weather.

I know Ford manuals (ZF's) from that era want ATF for lube. Anyone know what this NV should take? Thanks

New Venture 4500's can use either AMSOIL 50wt. gear lube or a GM syncromesh fluid part # 12346190. From GM, it's fairly spendy. AMSOIL will depend on where you get it. The syncro rings require some special service specs, and the GM and AMS will work. I work in a tranny shop and we use the GM stuff alot. My own tranny is running the AMSOIL, and has been for 10-12000 miles with no problem.

My Dodge factory manual says to use Mopar Synthetic 75W85 manual transmission lubricant for the NV4500.
