Water in Gas??

Neighbors called and said they needed a tire filled up. stuffed some tools and a jack in a wagon and decided to take the C over there. I filled the tank with gas from a can thats never been left in the rain recentially, and took off. She started on the third pull, and the second pull to come back.

We made it about half way up our driveway and she starts backfireing like no other. White spray or smoke mabey from the carb, black poofs from the muffler. She sounded horible. Limped her up to the garage and shut her down.

I think i got water in the gas, but its new gas and before this trip, i cranked her up when i got home from school today just for the heck of it. She promptly ran out of gas and so i went inside.

Got back out for this little trip and fueled her up. I know there was no water in the can or the tank, and i doubt the new gas is bad. This has to be something simple, but what??

Hey, im learning.......

Lanse,
I'd recommend E10 the alcohol will work like heat and make the water "burnable". Been using it in old tractors for 16-17 years with no harm.

Black smoke in a gas engine is running rich. If the redneck gas tank was rusty inside and you had no filter on the gas line to the carb, chances are good that you got gunk into the needle and seat and the needle is stuck open in the carb. The white smoke and spray..dunno but I'd check the needle and seat.

You don't have water. If you want to check, drain some, shake it up and pour some into a glass jar. In a few minutes it'll seperate and you'll see the water. It'll be below the gas. But, you don't have water.

Well if you have water in the gas you should be able to look at the sediment bowl and see it. Or remove the sediment bowl and look at the gas in it and pour it out. Water runs different then gas does and you should be able to tell the difference in it. What may have happened is a blown head gasket or a sleeve seal going bad which could cause it to do what it did.

redneck gas tank is clean, its always worked fine in the past, plus i was very careful to make sure the funnel i was using was clean.

I'll go clean it out....

thanks guys!!

Check the points first sounds like they may have closed.--replace the condenser.

Hello Lanse,
Take out a spark plug and see if it is wet with coolant. I suspect water in the combustion chamber. If you have antifreeze in it , the smoke should have a sweet smell to it and would be white at the exhaust stack. If you find water, compression test would be your next step.
Guido.
