I went to Cabella's the other day and I saw some beavers there. 1.What colors do beavers come in ? There was a real lightly colored one there almost blonde..2.They are a very meaty critter have any of you guys eaten them ?

you are on the wrong site, this is a tractor forum however, they do come in many different colors, and yes I have eaten beaver, does your wife know what you are doing on here?

yes!iused to trap for farmers ,damage control. drainage ditches mostly along corn fields that entered small streams here in wi..they love corn, willows aspen and wild cheery trees.their meat is dark red brown.baked in the oven,my x wife complimented me on how good the roast was, when she got home from work.[2nd shift]she asked was that venison or beef? [our venison in s.wi. pretty much corn fed.]i told her one of the flattails i got ther other day!her eyes got as big as saucers.ha,ha .

'Round here they're known as "Lounge Lizards," closely related to similar species that inhabits truck stops, "Lot Lizards." My suggestion, steer clear of all of them.

All kidding aside, I've heard that if you cut off the tail and roast it over an open fire until the outer skin bubbles and comes off, what's left will taste just like salt pork. I've trapped alot of beavers(swim in the water rodent kind) but never actually tried it.

On a similar note, muskrats used to be pretty common table fare in these parts. Back in the market hunting days of the early 1900's, one enterprising trapper here in the Nebraska Sandhills dressed and shipped dozens of muskrats to a fancy Chicago hotel which served them in their upscale dining room as "Marsh Rabbits". Seems the authorities got wind of this and tried to take action but they couldn't find any laws against selling muskrats for human consumption. However, the resulting publicity kinda closed the market for 'em.

Everybody's complaining about nutria- bigger than a muskrat, smaller than a beaver, vegetarian, play he!! with your creek bank or levee- can't see why they wouldn't be tasty.

I'll just ignore Plow Hand's "rude and crude". But he probably won't go away.
