I noted in yesterdays feature article about hand cranking tractor not one author mentioned the most important step in hand cranking a tractor. MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE THE D--N THING IS OUT OF GEAR!! This simple step can keep you alive for a few more days. Just a thought.

Also make sure your thumb is on top of the crank and only lift up on the crank NEVER push down on it.

I remember when I was a kid, a neighbor was hand cranking a CC Case and made the mistake of pushing down on the crank. It kicked back and the crank broke his leg. He limped for the rest of his life.

It's not to be taken lightly.

Dad had an Avery "A" that had to be hand cranked most of the time. Always put your thumb under the crank & pull up. I left it in gear once and it started on the first pull. When it came at me I stepped back, tripped, and I had a worms eye view of a BF Avery on the move! I'm glad it was in first gear. I never forgot to check after that. My brother restored Dad's tractor & takes it to shows every year.

I am a fairly strong for my age and size person and I can't pull straight up on my Case LA, the compression an size of the piston (100 CID per cylinder) pretty much puts a stop to that. I found that I can pull it near the top then rock it until I can pull it over the top. Smaller tractors are much easier to start but when one get a hold of 403 CID 4 cylinder engines with high compression you just have to be inventive.
You would surprised as to how big kids can't start my tractor. Makes one wonder what they do all day HUH???
