Does anyone know how to stratify the pine cones to get the seed to grow? I heard they have to be heated, but how hot for how long. The cones I have were on the tree over winter & have opened up. Are the seeds still there or did they fall out? This is in Minnesota so it may make a difference as to which white pine it is. I tried google but it didn't say anything about heating. I know it takes a forest fire to get them to grow.

they fell out as soon as they opened or as soon thereafter as wind or something dislodged them. The seeds or cones do not have to be heated. Does not take a forest fire to make them grow altho a fire may clear the ground & make it easier for them to get established. Plenty of good college text books on the subject, maybe used ones from nearby college of forestry. Your state forest tree nursery could also help. This info is for Eastern White Pine tho both will grow in your state. Western white pine is not native to MN.

Jack pine and western lodgepole are the trees that require heating to open the cones, it is called serotinous cones and they are a fire promoted species. White pine is pretty hard to propagate I believe.

I have picked up White Pine Cones in Spring and put them in a large yard waste plastic bag and let them dry in the shed rafters over the summer ( use pine cones as fire starters ) By fall there are some seed in the bag.
Let them dry over winter and plant in spring. Usually get a few to sprout in about two years. It may be easier to buy seedlings from your state nursery,
