I bought an old bobcat at an auction yesterday and am going to pick it up tomorrow. From a quick internet search today it looks like an
M-500 model with a variable speed mechanism and quick-tach bucket. Wisconsin engine, with what appears to be two gas tank filler necks--not sure about that. I paid $1500 for the machine, 2 buckets and 2 extra tires/rims. It felt like a good deal. What do I need to know right off the bat? Is the variable speed lever hydrostatic or variable belt? Where can I get a manual? Can I manufacture a ROPS, or are they commercially available? I appreciate any comments really. Thanks again.

If memory serves, it should be very similar to my 610. The variable speed is a variable belt. The transmission and hydraulics use automatic trans fluid. Make sure that one of the filler necks isnt for atf. (Bobcat had a bad habbit of putting the fuel filler necks and the hydraulic fluid necks close together for several years ie: 763 and similar) Unless your machine proves to be a hydro, dont jerk the controlls and try to turn on a dime. They are kind of a combo of mechanical/hydrostatic. Check the quick-tach for play. Sometimes the engaging lever will need to be fixed/modified. A ROPS could be obtained from bobcat at one time. One can be made, although I caution doing so. If you have to fabricate one make sure its done by a qualified fab shop. That being said use extreme caution lifting heavy loads as they tend to tip fairly easy. They can also "buck" like a rodeo horse if the attachment falls off. The wisconsin engine setup has a tendancy to vapor lock if you use it for a long period of time, especially in the summer. My email is open if you have any more questions. Good luck with your new machine.

Manuals are available from any bobcat dealer.
There's not many of model bobcats out there any more. I used to work at a bobcat dealership. didn't see many come in but had some with wisconsin engines and manual clutch type steering. What a pain to adjust. I'll take the hydrastat any day, but they had their problems also.

Either buy or build a ROPS or buy or build a coffin or fake limbs or a wheelchair.

I am not joking.

There are very dangerous reasons why skidsteers have ROPS and a seatbelt. Use both or junk the rig.

I have a M500, email me with the M500 as the subject. I've got the manuals and LOTS of experience repairing mine. Mine has the same ROPS, tires, etc. as the M610, etc.

I forgot to mention that in addition to the ROPS you need a seat belt. The safest place to be if it tips is inside the cab. Its saved my rear so many times I quit counting.
