farmall h valve adjustment

I need a sequence for adjusting the valves on a 39 h farmall. Such as when 1 cylinder is up adjust what valves. Then number 3 is up and so on

When the intake valve just closes adjust the exhaust. when the exhaust just starts to open, adjust the intake. Works no matter what # of cylinders, or layout.

When engine is at TDC on NO1 piston on the compression stroke you then can adjust valves counting from the radiator 1, 2,3 & 5 then rotate engine one full turn and adjust 4,6, 7 & 8. Hal

First thing you want to do is split the firing order in half as such, put 4 & 2 under 1 & 3;

1,3
4,2

1 & 4 are running mates
3 & 2 are running mates.

This means 1 & 4 are at TDC at the same time and the same goes for 3 & 2.

Turn the engine slowly and watch the exhaust rocker arm on #1 cylinder and when it stops moving or the exhaust valve closes then valves on # 4 cylinder are on compression and can be adjusted.

Next watch the exhaust valve on #3 cylinder when it closes adjust the valves on #2.

Next is #4 to watch the exhaust valve close and then adjust the valves on #1 cylinder

Last watch exhaust valve close on #2 and adjust #3.

If you do it as Al toro mentioned you will need to mark each rocker arm you adjust with a white marker so you know which ones have been done.

I think it's easier to do one cylinder at a time then in two revolutions of the crankshaft you're done.

On a 6 cylinder the firing order on some would look like this 1,5,3,6,2,4. Split in half. When watching the exhaust valve close on the top three cylinder 1,5,3 you would adjust the valves on the bottom three cylinders. 6,2,4. Do these one at a time of course.

6,2,4.

We were taught the easiest way to remember this firing order was to memorize this phrase. 15 is too young, 36 is too old, 24 is just right.
