Excessive exhaust heat

Hello. My friend has an old Case model CI crawler with a 4 cylinder engine. When it starts up it runs fine, but after about a minute, the exhaust gets real hot, starts to miss and backfire through the carb and does not sound as happy when first started.Anyone with any information on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance. Tom

Hot exhaust can be caused by late spark timing, lean mixture, or even a couple of plug wires scrambled so the affected cylinders don't fire and the unburned gas gets burned in the exhaust.

Check if the timing advance in the distributor is stuck. Twisting the rotor in the direction of rotation should allow the rotor to move close to 15 degrees against spring pressure. when released, the rotor should return to the original position.
Putting those few drops of oil on the felt pad inside the hollow rotor shaft is an often forgotten bit of yearly PM, which eventually allows the mechanism to stick and prevent any spark advance. They will idle fine, but rev them up and the exhaust gets red hot real quick.

Thank you for replying. The tractor has a magneto on it.I don't know if that would be any different but I will check it out.
Thanx again. Tom

Thank you Bob for replying. The tractor has a magneto on it.We tried turning the spark advance and to richen up the mixture. We will have to try to switch the plug wires around a little.
Thanx again for the reply. Tom
