Just wanted to know, whats the differance between a mule, nnalert and donkey? Wife saw baby donkeys for sale and wants one, NO!!!
I thought a mule was a cross between a horse and a donkey, or nnalert, so what is a nnalert or donkey?

Mule, hybrid offspring of a male donkey (see a$$) and a female horse, bred as a work animal. The name is also sometimes applied to the hinny, the offspring of a male horse and female donkey; hinnies are considered inferior to mules. The mule has many... a donkey is a a$$ even in the bible

My mule is a wonderful protector for my cows. We only have about 10 but he will run in circles to gather them up and chase them to a wooded part of the pasture if something appears "off" to him. I wouldn't have believed that he would do it, but I have seen it many times. He will also put the hurt on a dog or coyote if they get near the cows.

A mule is a cross between a mare horse and a jack donkey. A Hinny is a cross between a jenny (female) donkey and a stud horse. A Burro (Spanish term), donkey, nnalert (slang term) are all the same thing. Donkeys in 3 sizes Miniatures, standard and mammoth but all donkey sizes have donkey "parents" on both sides. Miniature are small for guard animals and the best guard would be the standard size. Not all donkeys make good guard donkeys. Hope this helps.

Some jacks will kill sheep too so be careful if you buy an adult. If they aren't raised with the sheep they don't bond really well, they will still attack coyotes and dogs but they will wander away from the sheep.

My nephew has bought half a dozen and none of then were worth a hoot at protecting anything.Give me a good ole farm dog anyday of the week.

if you have animals you want it to protect, get either a regular size or mammoth, when their first weaned and put them in pasture, they do better if their raised there.Actually amazingly smart animals,we have one old Mammoth here that will babysit a baby as well as you can.put a baby down on the ground and that donkey will stand over it all day!only time he will move is to take his head and herd it back if baby tries to crawl off, will even move to keep it in shade.if your thinking of getting a pony for some kids,a donkey will take care of them better than a horse and wont normally get mean like a pony will with kids messing with it.just watch if you get a mare they will sometimes get in the mothering mood and take a calf from a cow, only thing you can do is move cow and calf to a different field.take that calf away and those old mares will look all over trying to find it just like their mother!I dont and wont keep horses anymore but its really amazing how protective those donkeys can get.will kill a dog in a heartbeat and anything smaller doesnt stand a chance.oddly enough we keep cats in the barns and they wont bother them I guess they think they belong.

Any idea why hinnies are considered inferior to mules ? I have always heard that also but never thought about asking why. Could you tell the difference if you didn't know the parents ? If so, how ? Thanks

my wifes granddad that raised mules all his life used to say it was because they were too small to work ,too ugly to sell, too mean to raise, and too stupid to break..what all he meant by that i dont know, but he wouldnt have one.

Interesting, this hinney v mule thing. I called my dad, he has a degree in animal husbandry. He brought up 2 reasons. He said the gestation period is longer in a jenny than a mare, that the mare could have a colt every year, not so with a jenny, it took longer. Also, and I am not sure how to put this, but a jack and a mare are less selective about their breeding partners. The stalion and the jenny often refuse each other, much more selective. He went on further with the mule/hinney and said the purist in the field consider them the same and that individualism is more important. Further instructions were if you want the best mule bread a male donkey, the jack, with a belgum draft mare. He also said that when he was in college that they had several zebras they were breading with donkeys and horses. Called them Zenoneys and Doknras. My dad is smart, old and crazy. Not sure if he is teasing me or this happened. Plus my hearing is not to good. How many chromosons does a zebra have ? Horses have 24 and donkeys have 22. Any experts out there ?

Zebra cross with horse and donkeys known- sometimes seen in zoo or circus that has the parents in same pasture area. Some known in wild- Onager-wild asz- and zebra populations over lap somewhat. South African records of 19th century noted ocassional cross breed of zebra to farmers horses. Since offspring usually sterile, not many around. RN
