Corn Head for a John Deere7700 Combine

Wouldn"t it be 843? 443 is a four row 30 inch, 643 is 6row 30 inch. Also, early and late are different- late ones had black edging on the decal, and I believe enclosed chain drives or gearboxes. JD guys would know.

843 was the number in the era the 7700 came out, and for quite some time after that. They were very popular. Don't know if you are looking for one or not, but there are pros and cons to the open chain drive on the head or 'oil bath'drive. With the newer style oil bath you hardly ever have to replace the drive chains, but if you have to pull the shaft to work on a gear box you have to mess with a gasket and seal, pus the oil. The old non-oil bath style required repacement of the chain and sprockets more often, but it's super simple to do and pulling the drive shaft is less time consuming. Jim

This corn head was bought used(and wore out) about 28 years ago. It hasn't had any decals or tags on it since i have owned it, and so i was just wondering what exactly it was.
Thanks for the replies.

I didn't know there was such a thing as a worn out Deere Cornhead. The 843 I was involved with was bought new with a 7700, then went on a 8820, then a CIH 1680, then a CIH 2188, then a 2388. Every gear box was rebuilt at least three times, maybe five times,(no kidding)and the tinwork under the auger has been completely replaced twice. I even made brackets for my engine stand so I could put a gear box on it to do a quick overhaul and I got pretty good at getting a broken shaft out of a stalk roll.

Ever since it was on the 8820 it was speeded up and pushed to the max. The drive chains would last a half season before they got so hot they turned blue. As of four years ago the gear boxes were the same as the ones on the new heads. When they traded it off it was like losing a member of the family. Jim
