front axle springs

Hey folks,
Thinking about putting the loader back on my tractor and thinking about a couple mods. Most important is the front springs that collapse under load (picture). It seems like all the extra movement can't be that good for the frt end (??). Would I do more harm than good if I took out the springs and replaced them with the correct length and diameter 1/4 inch wall pipe?

Any advise appreciated.

Dave

I've never seen a farm tractor here in the U.S. that has a spring set up like yours. All of them are solid. I will assume that your front axle does pivot where it mounts to the tractor frame? If so, I think I would get rid of those springs and replace with something solid.

Thanks! It does pivot. Tractors spend as much time on the road as in fields here, maybe the reason for the springs.

When I put something solid, I want to hold on to the springs and not weld anything (so I can put it back to original if necessary). Should I put rubber on each end?

I'm certainly not an engineer, but I don't think the rubber would be a good idea. Wouldn't the rubber just compress under load?

I can't tell from the picture, but does that spring have a thrust bearing on each end?

I'm giving you that look................ I'll figure out what you're asking and get back with you

From what I can see, I'd remove the nut on top, raise it up to drop the assembly out, then replace the loose spring with something solid (????)

As for travel, 2" is all it can collapse. It just looks bad.

i think i would leave it as is. obviously it was designed to have movement so seems to be a bad thing to eliminate that. has to have some give somewhere, question is: where would the stress/strain move to if you shift it elsewhere by making the spring area solid and unmoving?
just mumbling

My take on this is that the German engineers are some of the best in the world. I would not mess the tractor with removing the springs. Just lubricate as to specs. Why cobble up a good working design. Tom
