case rc starter question

Have a 1936 Case RC. On the left side of the motor there appears to be a place for a starter. It currently has an old can with a rag sealing it up (not very well I might add). Is there a starter option for this tractor? If not, what is this for and how do I seal it? [email protected]

I have a 1938 Case RC and it has a starter in that spot. Even with the starter in there it is hard to get a proper seal. You would need to see if your flywheel has teeth on it for a starter.

If that has the original engine, it's probably a Wauk FC, and the FC came with either crank or elec start.
Some of the earliest models came with a Wauk FKJ, and if you have that engine, and it has a place for a starter, it must've had the same option.
There should be a tag on the engine giving model, b/s and serial #. If you're happy with the crank you could just cut a piece of something solid and bolt it on over the hole, using the existing bolt holes for the starter...assuming there're threaded bolt holes there...(be sure the bolts you use aren't so long they hit the flywheel).
If there's no tag, sorry, I don't know the differences in the two engines.

I am fine with the crank start. It does not appear to have threaded holes for a starter and that is what confused me. The flywheel does not appear to have teeth either. Sooooo, how do you seal the hole?? Can I drill and tap some short holes and built a delete plate for it? Is there perhaps a expandable seal somewhere that can be bought?

Sounds like the production line for these engines was rigged to skip drilling and tapping starter boltholes on those engines intended to be crank start, and, yes, engines intended for crank start would have a plain (no ring gear) flywheel. I understand some can be converted and some cannot.
Anyway, if you want to return yours to whatever was there when new, put this question down on the Case forum, and you'll almost certainly get replies from other R Series owners as to what's on theirs.
If you're not trying for original, anything you can Mickey Mouse in/on to cover/plug the hole will do, from SuperGlue on up (or down); just be sure nothing goes far enough into the flywheel housing to contact the flywheel
If you put this on the Case forum, and no one is helpful, I think a man named Tom Railsback, who posts on smokstak, has several R's, and might be helpful.

I checked again tonight and there is plenty of room to drill and tap a delete plate over the hole. Thanks for all the tips. No one has rear steel for it do they?

Carl, The RC will accept a starter. An SC Case starter will fit. They use the one bolt set screw type to hold the starter in, same as the SC and DC models. Ring gear is usually not on the earlier models but ring gear from an Allis Chalmers WD is supposted to fit. I have the parts but have not put mine on yet.
