OT: Bee Keeping??

We decided to get a couple of stands of bees this year. Dad always had bees growing up, so I'm use to working around them. One big question though, he always had Italians, but some people are now suggesting that we might should look at Russians. Any major diiferences in the bees?? I know the Russians are suppose to be a little more resistant to mites, and I've also been told they are a little more gentle, but might make a little less honey. Anybody have any experience between the two?? Thanks,

Casey

i never kept any of the russian bees. i kept between 15-20 colonies of italian bees. they were very gentle and i usually didn"t wear gloves when working them. i did have one exception. a colony i got from a friend. they were just downright nasty. they would follow me down the line wanting to sting, even after i closed the hive back up. i quickly learned to work that hive last. kept the peace that way. these hives were kept not fifty feet out my back door and the only sting in the whole family was when my daughter stepped on one barefooted. her, not the bee.
