Perkins 4.236 question

Howdy all,

I'm getting ready to rebuild the engine on my MF175. All the machine work is done and I'll be ordering a Maxiforce kit. It comes with either strait or lipped sleeves. There was some indication on the heads that the sleeves had been beeting on it. I understand that the lipped sleeves will prevent this. Here's the problem: my machinist doesn't know how to do the machine work to make the new style fit. Is there someplace I can point him for a technical bulletin on this? Maybe Maxiforce has this info? Any experience you can share will be appreciated.

I assume that you are talking about the lip on the top. Yes it will need to be fit for the right height or you will have the same problem as before.
You are talking about the counterbore most Caterpillar dealers can do it and the tool can be bought if you want to go that route. If there is no counterbore now it will have to be cut in. There are specs for that so the head and block fit right and still give the proper crush on the head gasket. Machine shops worth their salt can do this with a boring mill also.

A 4.236 is a 4 cylinder version of a 354 six and they used the flange style sleeve. One thing for sure you do not have the old sleeves out and if fit properly they probaly take 20 ton of force to remove them. You better get the block apart before you order parts. You may need to install a repair sleeve to get the proper press fit for your new sleeves.

Rebuilt a few of these over that past few years. Went back with the original type sleeves, They lasted 20 to 30 years before so why question them.
to get the old sleeves out, take a stick welder and run a few beads up and down the inside of the sleeve. they will drive out so much easier then.
going back I put the new sleeves in the freezer for a few hours , then take a heater of some sort and warm the block as hot as you can get it, they have all went together pretty easy so far.
