98 Chevy K1500 Front Driveshaft Q's

Had some bad u-joints in the front drive shaft on this truck. The shaft did not want to collapse to come out of the truck. After out, disassembly reveals some sort of plastic in the splines. Any idea what this is? Is it important? It is coming out in pieces. The U-joints still had the plastic holding the caps in so I suspect that it hasn"t been out before. I would guess the locked up shaft caused the u-joints to fail, any ideas on what this stuff is?

TIA

The splines on the shaft are coated in plastic, probably to make the splines slip easily and quietly.

If the covering is falling off, it's time for a new driveshaft or have a driveshaft shop replace the slipjoint.
