I have a John Deere 50 with a 3 point. Is this suppose to have normal toplink? The top link I got with it has 2 straight arms with an 8 inch piece of steel at the one end. I have never seen one of these and am wondering what it is or how it attaches. Any help appreciated.

The top link you described is the top link for a 800,800A, or 801 hitch. It attaches to brackets that mount on the axle housings.

What you described as an 8" piece of steel is the "evener bar". It hooks to the mast on 3pt equipment.

The link below has photos and a parts list for all 3 hitches.

You also have to have a bracket that goes into the top link mounting on your blade or whatever implement you are using that the evener hooks into and that bracket will not fit a lot of implements other than Deere made in the 50's & 60's.

The bracket Leroy referred to is called a Mast Bracket. Deere made 17 different ones for various implements. The most common one is P819A which is used with 9 different implements. Many other ones fit only 1 implement.

They mount on the implement "mast" and as Leroy said the Evener Bar hooks to them and gives you a 3rd or top link.

The link below goes to a table that shows all of them and what implements they fit.
