I might be a redneck

The other day I was moving big rounds for a friend when my better half called and asked if I had forgotten something, of course I had as I had no idea what she was talking about. Well it turns out I had "volunteered" to take mom in law out to dinner, well I had no time to go get my truck so drove the Oliver 1755 to the restaurant in town and met them there. Needless to say that made for lots of fun redneck jokes. MIL thought it was cool though so I never even caught hell. :>)

But have you ever driven the tractor to the autoparts store while dragging the manure spreader along behind?

Couldn't ever do that here in Mass. State law says you can only go 10 miles from your farm over the road. Until recenlty it used to only be 2 miles from your farm.

Hey,You think thats bad I drove my JD R to the coffee shop poeple definitely gave me a look...The women really liked it most of them never have never seen a tractor in their life...

I have responded to fires multiple times with a tractor with various implements in tow. they tell me to sign on 47 tractor one.

No. Needed a part for the truck and it was too much trouble to unhook the spreader. I take the tractor to the Chat and Chew for lunch quite often though. I work ground right up to and inside the village limits on the west and north sides of town,so come noon,I just swing into the parking lot out behind.

Wisconsin has a number of bars and restaurants with tractors parked in parking lots- Adams county may have 1/2 the bar lots with tractors in it on Saturday nights. This is the result of state law that says you don"t need a drivers license to operate a "implement of husbandry", and they can go on regular streets and county roads- just can"t go on interstate. Result is the drunk drivers who get their license suspended or revoked use a tractor to get around- grocery store, restaurant or bars. Seed corn picking crew I was working with stopped at bar and grill for lunch because it had big parking lot, close to field we were working- couple police cars stopped, looked, and asked for license check for ID only so they could run warrant checks, said they knew we didn"t need drivers license at our age but the tractors weren"t the usual ones they keep track of. Only 2 of crew didn"t have drivers license- one of them was for 3 time drunk driving+ revoked. Police said drunk tractor driving was covered under general drunk and disorderly statute - but no points taken off suspended/revoked license, just possible overnight in jail and big fine. 4440 JD can"t outrun police car on road, offroad is eluding charge to add but doesn"t usually happen, drunk knows he doesn"t have to worry about losing license. Still had couple squad cars driven over by large tractor on police reports. RN

No different than showing up with a work truck on your lunch break. JUst your's is bigger and better...

Yup,can't tell you how many folks around here drove a tractor when they lost their license for drunk driving. Funniest one was Mort when he lost his. He had a stem wind JD A with no ring on the steering wheel, just the spokes,no fenders. Came out of the IGA one time with 2 bags of groceries and a watermellon. The tractor was running but driven into a parking spot forward. He got on,holding the groceries in each arm,the watermellon between his legs, trying to run the hand clutch and turn it at the same time. Could have been the $100,000 winner in AFV if there had been such a thing at the time.

In Michigan, if your license is revoked, driving anything is illegal. They have arrested people here for driving without a license on little Sears mowers. If you see an adult on a bicycle, it's usually a good assumption he has lost his driver's license.

I worked in the county Jail for about a year in '73. One day, they brought in Ernie- noted local drunk and frequent inhabitant of the lock-up. He got 6 months for drunk driving- hadn't had a license for years, but thinking he had found a loophole, drove his Ferguson TO-30 to town. Ended up at the tavern, of course, got loaded and was stopped on his way home. Legal to drive tractor without a license, but drunk driving law prohibited driving any motor vehicle under the influence. His loophole had become a noose.

We were always happy to have Ernie spend a little time with us, as he was the best "Trusty" you could ever have. Swept up around the place, you could send him out for smokes or treats and he would actually come back (and didn't even steal your change), etc. His quarters were never locked, and he had the run of the place. I was on graveyard, so he'd come out and we'd talk farming. I think his life inside (3 hots and a cot, free smokes, etc.) was probably better than when he was out.

Wife and I had just bought a farm, and I made a deal with the neighbors to do the hay- they arranged for cutting and baling, and I got a share. Came home and saw the hayfield had been cut, and also around the house, barn, orchard, etc. Looked great. Wife said this "funny little portly bald man" had come to the door, asked if I was the deputy that worked at the jail, then asked if he could "mow around" the farmstead. When she asked how much he wanted, he said, "No charge, ma'am- your husband was one of the only guys at the jail that treated me like a human being. I'd just like to return the favor."

Where ever you are, Ernie, I hope the lodgings are to your liking.

A few of the locals around here have no drivers liscense due to drunk driving so they drive tractors to the bar. Everyone knows the tractors so we all keep clear if we see them coming.

no mights about it, rrlund informed me just the other day i was a redneck,...damn he's smart....

It might be illegal in Livingston county but I don't believe it is over here. At least if it is, it is not enforced. We have one old guy here in NW Kent county that drives a little Ford around all year. Seen him at the bar and the gas station. Another guy drives some little yellow Cub all over town. The sherriffs office is in downtown GR so they have a permanent officer that works out of the high school here and he never does anything to the guys running all over on their tractors.

I did that? I don't remember. What was it about. Man,you must have REALLY done something off the wall.

I am more than not on the other end of this. Every one around here has driven a tractor to dinner or a 4 wheeler to school. I have to drive 18 miles one way to work. Don't like putt'n that many miles on a truck all year. (Tires, fuel, oil, miles, ect,) I have a little 2000 two door chevy cavalier. The guys at the co-op will tell you it will hold 500 lbs of pre-con feed or seed in the back if you let the seat down. 3 cases of off shoot t will fit in the truck. I get some strange looks.

drive a tractor to school day here, FFA meetings, friends places, school projects, good stuff

You should check if you need a license to drive a tractor on the road. I think you do but not sure. A few years ago a grader operator got a DUI and another operator had to come down to move the grader. Dave

There was one case here in Montcalm though, that was so severe, they banned the guy from mowing his lawn with a rider. He had to give up dirt track racing for the season. The Judge banned him from that too.

My brother and I got caught pulling crab traps without a license when we were young. When the time for us to go to court dad was out of town and mom was at work so we had to drive a tractor to the court house because neither one of us was old enough to have a drivers license. They dropped the charges because they would have had to send us to juvinile court prosecute us. I don't know if that qualifies me as a redneck but some times it makes me wonder when I call my mother to find out who won the Nascar race and can get a full account of every lap.
