OT Chevy Pickup

I have a 2003 1500 Chevrolet with a 5.3 engine and automatic transmission. While driving on really wet road conditions, the amber ABS warning light comes on, then followed by the red brake warning light coming on. Then the speedometer drops to 0 and the transmisson goes into neutral. This has happened now about 4 times in the last year. I can always get it home in second gear. Been to the local dealer twice, new speedo cluster and vehicle speed sensor. Any body else ever had this problem with there Chevy?

Sounds like it's loosing battery voltage to the shift solenoids. For second gear, all of the solenoids are off. What DTC's are in the ABS module? I think you may have more than 1 problem. The speedo (IPC)is electronic and if I remember correctly it gets it's signal via serial data from the ABS module. There are several grounds attached to the cab mount right under the driver's feet. One of which is the ground point for the ABS module. They are a common source of trouble for the ABS. If the ABS is going down, that could explain the loss of the speedo and I would expect to see IPC lost communication with ABS module stored in the IPC. Take the ground wires loose and buff them and the spot on the frame shiny clean. Put some die electric grease on the connection between the terminals and the frame, then paint over them with rubberized underbody coating.

Had an '03 Avalanche in shop last spring that had identical symptoms(except for wet conditions). No power at trans shift solenoid feed circuit fuse due to bad ignition switch.

Hi Chuck. You have a bad conction on the vehicle speed sensor wires to the pcm. The trans is defauting to third gear because is uses the vehicle speed sensor as an input. If your pickup
is a 4x4 it will have a conetion above the transfer case by the fuel lines.

It sounds like the problem I had in my 2000 Silverado. I had the cluster replaced once and it did it again. I got to looking on the internet and found something.

There is a service bulletin on this. It was actually the transmission wiring harness. It needed to be replaced. I brought it to the attention of my dealer. They ordered the upgraded wiring harness and replaced it and the cluster again. No more problem.
