Mounting 18.4-46 tires in place of 20.8-38s on a deere 4840?

Hey all,

My dad has a 4840 Deere with completely shot 20.8-38s on the back. I've been told by at least 2 people that mounting 18.4 46 tires make a tractor out of it. We would also have to replace the duals, of course. This leads to two questions -

Has anyone on here done this to a high horsepower 2wd tractor and was it worth it?

Should I replace the cast hubs and rims for $1300 a side through Worthington Ag parts or buy step-up rims at 750 a side?

Thanks,

Bill

How do you define "make a tractor out of it"???

If you mean increase torque and or lugging ability, the larger diameter wheel would do the opposite...

If you mean make the tractor faster in every gear, I guess maybe it would (assuming they'd fit, like usetob pointed out)...

I like the 20.8s on my 4840...

Just my 2 cents...

Hey,

I assumed they would since others claimed they did it, but that's something to look into. We have 18.4-42s on a 4640.

if they fit the 46 the should fit the 48, on mine with 20.8-38, I only have about 4" clearance, got me bumfuzzled!

not from my experience I had a 4850mfwd with 42 inch rubber on it. Was goods unit with front wheel assist engaged. pretty helpless when you had it out. Basically two wheel drivwe in that size can't hold the power to the ground with out really loading it down then it moreless becomes boat anchor effect.

I don't know about the 46 in. tires but I have a 4640 with 20.8 R 38s and have a lot better traction with them then the 18.4 R 42s on a 4650.

R1-W Firestone radials on the 38" rims.
What is the tractor used for?Type of soil?
Too much or too little ballast will make or break a machine"s performance.

Lets see 2600.00 for casting or 1500.00 for rims plus tires. About 800.00 for tires each. Corn at 3.00 I would just put on new tires then if need load the duals for more traction and put the difference in my pocket.

Did you have the traction problem when the tyres were new? Are you plowing too deep or is your equipment unsuitable for this tractor, What did the manufacturer recommend.?. Think about that before believing people who say "make it a tractor". Hitch their tractor to your equipment and give it a try. Then you can make a decision.
