Ford 861Rotary mower

I recently purchased a 1958 Ford 861 tractor. I believe it is rated at about 46hp. I am looking at two 3 point rotary mowers. One is a 6ft, and the other is 7ft. They are both in good shape. I am wondering which one I should buy. I am leaning towards the 7ft mower, but do not know if my tractor has the power to operate a mower that size. Any info would be great. Thanks

For what it's worth, some years ago when I was Buildings and Grounds Supervisor for a local public school district, we ran a 7 foot, two blade rotary mower behind a 971 Ford with Selectospeed. You couldn't have asked for a better combo, although with the 8 speed, Selectospeed transmssion in heavy stuff sometimes we'd be down in 1st and 2nd. Typically, we could usually run in 4th or 5th.

I don't know what the difference in hp is between the 971 and 861.

If a finish mower.. then 7' is fine.. if a rough cut mower.. stay away from single spindle models.. that take lots of power.. a dual spindle 7' might be ok.

6' will swing like the tractor doesn't even know it's back there.

I'm sure there are plenty of SOS missing a couple ranges out there and are 8spds.. but yeah.. they left ford as 10sp. ;)

As Sound said if your in heavy stuff the 6 footer will be all that tractor wants and even then sometimes more then it will want. I have used a 6 footer for years behind my 841 and at times it is more then enough for it to handle.

We had a 861 and 5 ft was enough in heavy cutting. Pasture clipping and mowing short grass go with the 7 ft, although for moderate height grass cutting I would choose the six ft. We ran a 60 hp tractor on the 7 ft and it was all it could handle in heavy grass. Eighty hp on the 7 ft allows you to cut about anything.

Thank you all for the information. I actually loked at a mower today. It was a Alamo 7ft flail mower. The guy is asking $300. The mower looked to be in good shape. This is in my price range. It looks like from some of the postings that a 7' rotary mower might be a handful for my tractor. Would a flail mower be any different? Would my tractor be able to run this?

Thanks
