I am trying to determine which trucks/tractors had a Buda 6DT-317 used in them. My ultimate goal is to find a transmision to mate to one of the 2 Buda engines I have. I am restoring a WWII scout car that has an engine but no trannie. I am also looking for the correct manual which is TM9-1705D.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Buda 6 DT 317 was available in these trucks
Available 36-42,Clydesdale 36-40,Dart 36-42,Duplex 36-42,Gramm 36-42, Hug 36-42, Mack 36-42,Reo 36-42,
Sterling 36-42, Ward LeFrance 36-42. This is a partial list of trucks that used Buda engines with
4DT,6DT,6LD and 6DH prefix. Some of the above used 6DT 317 but my info from Motors manual does not say which truck used which engine. I hope this helps but suspect may be more hindrance than help.

Bill, I just got off the phone with a military collector buddy of mine (I've done some restorations for him), asking him a few questions. If yours came out with the Buda engine it is a rare bird that's very well worth restoring. White motors made 21000 of the M3A1 and only 100 had the Buda. The rest had a Hercules JXD with 110 HP.

Portrayal press makes replica manuals for military vehicles, so you might try them. Where are you at? I'd be mighty interested in seeing your project. Jim

Hey Jim.
Actually White only made 107 of the diesel conversions under an Army experimental contract and only 6, from what I can determine, were powered by Budas. The remainder were Herc DJXDs. The project was scraped for I don't know why yet and the cars were all shipped to Russia under lend-lease where they remained active duty line units thru the 60's.
Mine was one of two, one Buda one Herc that were not shipped again for unk reasons at this point.

Thanks for the headsup on Portrayl but the manual TM9-1705D is so off the wall that they don't have it and I would probably be the only one requesting a copy so why would they look.

As far as seeing the project, I've got it torn down to the frame at this point and all you can tell is that it's a scout car but that's about it. I've got the original engine and now a backup and piles and piles of spares in boxes and crates and in places my wife would rather they not be.

If you're going to be anywhere near Rochelle IL on June 20th we have 150 antique military vehicles and 15 or so warbirds rolling in for an overnight stop. There is a WWII USO style dinner/dance with period entertainer impersonators, an MV parts/vehicle swap Meet and lots of other activities. We also are now the home to Roberts Armor Museum www.robertsarmory.com. The host hotels are US Express, Baymont and Comfort Inn & Suites. More info is available at the club webpage mvpa.org. Lower left corner has a link to the 90th anniversary convoy.

Are you going to be involved with the Lincoln Highway cross country tour this summer? I think it stops for the night at Jefferson, IA. , which is 90 miles ffom here. My buddy MIGHT join them at Jefferson . My email is open.Jim

According to "The Allis-Chalmers Story" by CH Wendel, a 1940 Buda catalog shows a Ford truck equipped with a Buda 6-DT-317 diesel engine. I am not a truck expert, but the picture is good enough someone in the know could easily identify it. The article talks about fuel economy improvements over the standard engine, and how easy the conversions were.. It does not say if this was a "one-off" conversion or not, but sort of reads like it was. The book does not go into a lot of detail, as AC did not take over Buda until 1953. Maybe a 1940 Buda catalog could be found? Good luck on your restoration-I know how hard it can be to locate info on the more unusual items.

CH Wendel's Allis Chalmers book states the DT-317 had 75 horses and was used in some trucks, Buda also had a heavy truck engine that had 1150 cubes and 300 horses. These engines were put in trucks as retrofits in the late thirties and into the forties and by the early fifties several truck builders were regularly using these engines.

If the engines in the thirties and forties were retrofits as the book claims I wonder how they were adapted to the transmissions. I do know the military used New Process trannies in some of the trucks including the White/Diamond T/Autocar built half-tracks in the WW2 era.Jim
