foam filled tires - any good?

Thinking about filling the front tires on my JD 850 with foam. Tire size is 5.00x15. How much will they weigh? Since I don't have power steering, will it be a problem? I've heard that the rims will be ruined by the process - but just exactly how? Appriciate any pros / cons on the process.

when i worked for John Deere in the shop, we used a pink colored "bubble gum" type of tire sealant. really messy stuff, but it helped from getting flat tires. call local tractor dealer or maybe tractor supply co. they may have some information for you.

I don't know the exact weight but my guess is that they would end up in the 100 pound range, perhaps a tad more. I don't think they would cause any steering problems. It is expensive to do but if your working around thorns it is in my opinion the only way to go. A few years back I was working around locust trees a lot and could not keep air in the front tires, foam filled and problem solved. The tires will no longer be able to be removed from the rims so start with good tires, preferably new, and they will last for several years.

There are drawbacks, The foam fill makes for a rough ride and it will have a little effect on steering. The pink and green stuff to stop leakes will rust your rims bad.

I filled the fronts on my backhoe with foam rubber, not the lighter foam that looks like insulation. With the foam rubber you have the same bounce that you did with air, they are not hard. They are very heavy, I would guess the stuff is as heavy as calcium, and it is fairly expensive, my tires are about 12 x 16 and they were $250 each to have filled, so start with a good tire not a half wore out carcass. Could not be happier with mine.

we had our old skidsteer tires filled. they put tubes in first then filled em. when the tires needed replacement, they cut the old tires off the rims. tube saved the rims from the goo.

And the rims were coated with silicone, when it's time for new tires you cut the tire off and cut through the foam and peel it off of the rim.

I foam filled All my previous loader tractor front tires .Always were new Too . However ..The tires looked real good when I got my 1986 GREY market YANmurray, so I foam filled those the 1st time I got a flat ,, Big mistake ,Shoulda bought new tires ..Those Rice bunnyshoes are really starting to give up on sidewalls and tearouts on the tread pattern,, I will be lucky if i get another Year out of them ,,..
