Sand hill cranes going north

Glad to hear you say that, its about time something heading north, because all we see is the snowy owls sitting on poles yet.

We've starting to get backed up with them here in Central Nebraska.

Only ones I have ever seen here in western, Ohio were the two I posted about last fall. This must not be a fly-way for them here. Lots of Canada geese going north though... Gene

Sandhill cranes are so cool!!! I could listen to them all day. Not as plantive and majestic as Canada geese, but I can't think on a bird that flies higher in migration.

Nebraska gets so many because of the Platte--"an inch deep and a mile wide."

I did see a couple of red-winged blackbirds the other day. No robins or woodcock but should be very soon.

Larry in Michigan

Yep Larry,
The Platte is running out of space right now, what with all the Canadian Geese, White Snow Geese and Ducks in the area. I hope they can make it through without any outbreaks of Fowl Cholera....as tightly packed as they are.

Here in central Saskatchewan nothing but snow bunting,s magpies& ravens the usual winter birds. Temps have been running a consistant 20 degrees below normal day and nite for rhe past week.Forecast for tonite is -31 C and tomorrow a balmy -21C The birds know where to stay.

Heard and saw the "scouts" 4 days ago, no big group yet. They have several nesting grounds around the Chain of Lakes here.

They were in Mid-Michigan on Saturday.

Total of 6 so far. Only in the last couple years have I seen them up here.

For 5+ years I see them all around metro-Detriot.

Just wondering when that picture is from? It's still winter in Manitoba, but it's good to hear there's signs of spring somewhere.
