Farmall axle color

I was wondering if anyone knows if a Super M had red axles or black axles when it came new from the factory. I've seen restored ones both ways.

Paint them the way that you like the best. After all, it is YOUR tractor!! I painted an H red with silver rims and axle shafts. It looked really sharp. Maybe not exactly historically correct, but I liked it and that was all that mattered to me. Have fun. That's what this hobby is all about.

I dimly remember seeing new Cs, Hs, and Ms at a dealer when a small boy and as I remember the axles were black but I don't guarantee it.

Please keep your tractor at home where you can appreciate it"s wierdness by yourself. If you are going to restore a tractor most people would like it to be just that RESTORED.

I agree with you Kippster about it being "beauty is in the eye of the owner". I don't fully agree with the collectors making anything "better than new" what's that mean anyway? If it's better than new then it's not an accurate restoration is it? Such as using clear coat paint or any super glossy type paint, painting the tractor with it dis-assembled, maybe even the use of paint hardener. None of which are accurate restorations, just something the owner is very proud of. So do it your way and be proud of it within reason of course. It still needs to look like it's heritage. My particular type of restoration is all internal. Paint doesn't interest me as much as having it working good. Since the farmer that originally bought the tractor used it, didn't show it and probably wouldn't put much money into a paint job if something got scratched or dinged up why should I? So ...He should do as you suggest and have fun with it. ...Randy

To me the right color of the axles are the finishing touch if they don't do that right they took a short cut somewhere else too...

I believe they were unpainted from the factory. Thus tarnished black. A reason is that the wheels and axles were often moved and refit from rail flatcar to show room. paint would be difficult to work with, and be boogered up in the process. Putting a thin stove black on them to look black would be OK, JimN

KEH, where was the closest dealer? I think I can recall one in Gaffney, and there was still one in Anderson a few years ago.. I might be too young, but I never recalled on in S'burg county .

I know there was one in Newberry. The one in Easley closed about 3 yers ago, and I think there is still one in Seneca. I too would like to know where the one near KEH is/was.

Hi, Davis, John. The IH dealer I was at then was in Laurens. It was closed/sold sometime in the 1960s and the new owner became a succesfull Ford dealer. He is rather old and in poor health and recently had a falling out with NH and has Kubotas now. The only other IH dealer I know of now is at Bishopville, at least he was there the last time I was down that way.
