pneumonia in cattle

Anyone seen escalated cases this year in the mid east due to the funny weather we've been having. I've been around cattle forever, have had my own on and off the past three years and i lost a black bred cow today. She would have calved in probably 5 weeks or less, I just bought her last summer. For some reason It bothers me to lose a cow, especially after you care for it while it's sick, carrying it water or giving it shots. I noticed her odd acting thursday night, giving her medicine friday night and this morning (saturday). The medicine I administered to her was Trical 50. This morning she seemed much better, no white snot in her nostrils, less panting, and eyes weren't sunken in as much. Went to check on her tonight and she was dead. With her having pneumonia, do I have to worry about the others catching it? What are earlier symptoms of pneumonia than what she had? Is LA 200 my only option for helping fight pneumonia or can I administer a tube of gel to the throat or an IV or something?

Thanks

Some folks lick pnuemonia with Nu Flor in calves.I dont know if its used in cows or not.I lost a calf this week that no medicine did any good.Sorry bout the cow also.Ive lost 2 this year.

Are your cows in or out? No I dont think it is transmittable. Most of the time calfs get it due to damp poor air circulation conditions, I would find out first what caused it and go from there..... good luckj

Sanitation and prevention, do you have a yearly vaccination program in place for the foundation herd? Do you vaccinate and give boosters to new additions to the herd, do you have dry lots, pastures or pens to keep new arrivals isolated from the rest of the herd for 2-3 weeks? Worming is also very important as parasite infested animals have weak immune systems. Disinfecting the barn and pens is important, don't forget squeeze chute, livestock trailer, feed bunks etc. Sunlight and fresh air do a good job over time but if you have animals from off your farm it pays to use lysol or clorox solution in a sprayer and lime the barn and pens after each cleaning. If you buy sale barn cattle you have to remember that most people don't do any of the above so you are taking a chance on bringing parasites/diseases on your place. Proper management should reduce or eliminate the risk.

I think it was just bad timing or luck. I've had all animals for approx 1 year. Bull, 1 cow, and 4 other cows came from different farms. All were nnalert when they came and I have no barn. One cow aborted in January and that is the one I didn't give a lepto shot so I'm unsure what happened to her, she did recieve a shot after the fact. This cow just up adn got sick. It just bothers me a little because she was so close to calving, but I know you cannot win em all. Cows can have a mishap and die calving also. I guess I'm just learning by doing, I know I'm not the only one with all this trouble.

Thanks

Poor ventilation in housed cattle. Changing weather in outside cattle. Adult cows outside seldom get pneumonia. And if you noticed her Thurs nite you should have treated her Thurs nite. Sulfa and penicillin are as good as anything. Cows going off feed will be your first sign in housed cattle. They will eat grass hay but won't want grain.

I heard that, I was sick for a week. I guess cattle are just like us when the crazy weather changes like it has been this past winter.
