See If I have this right and almost self explanatory. I'm loosin more sleep because i can't get my point across. This "B" thing is botherin me.

If you bring # 1 to TDC with both valves closed on that cyl and loose enough to get the feeler gauge in between rocker and valve stem.that is half the idea. this reminds me are the valves adjusted correctly I know it was a new rebuild ? was the head just thrown on? I'll have to throw that possibility out because i saw the job the guy did and surly bench adjusted them

next check the pointer on the mag. should be on # 1 post on cap.

If it is that means the cam is out of time correct?

I know the way we started one was .

Ignition off--full choke crank one time 2 at the most.{after sitting for a month or so} then half choke, ignition on and it started immediately.

I hope you make it to help him I know it shouldn't need pulled more than 3or 4 revolutions of that engine,

Let us know

I meant to say the cam would be out if the valves had any resistance at TDC on #1 cyl that the cam could be out .

Pressed the wrong button editing.

Roy, an easy way to find top dead center is to write down the firing order like 1-3-4-2 take the last half of the numbers an put them directly under the first half. The number that is directly under the top number is at the top when the other is. Turn it around till number 1 is at the top the watch number 4 (in this case) the valves should move up an down as you roll the engine back and forth stop when the two valves are just stopped at the closed position. this will be TDC on number 1.
You can then check to see if the piston is at the top position if not the cam is out of time.
Most older engines will time at 10 deg. before TDC and 30 deg. at full advance. If there is no mark on the front pulley then put a chalk mark at these two positions on the pulley and on the block for reference.
I hope that this helps call me if you have trouble.
