Water Pump on 3 liter Ford Ranger

How do you hold the water pump pulley in order to separate the viscous fan clutch from the water pump while on the vehicle?

What I've done is, before loosening the serpentine belt, put a large crescent wrench on the clutch shaft and give it a sharp whack with another large wrench or suitable hammer. They'll usually pop loose. Sometimes you may need to have a helper put more tension on the belt. And check the rotation beforehand. Depending on how the belt is routed, some rotated one way and some the opposite. Which also requires you to get the water pump with the proper rotation.

Last one I did was on an Aerostar van in the parking lot of an Autozone store in Bloomington, Illinois on Y2K New Year's Day. It wasn't the way I'd intended to spend the day, but when you're 500 miles from home you do what you have to.

a word of caution, check direction of rotation, this may be a left hand thread, it loosens by turning in the direction of fan rotation. then as goose says large wrench and hammer.

there is a special tool for that one goes over the fan shaft the other goes over the bolts on the pulley to hold it steady. Go to the parts store and ask for a clutch fan tool for a ford much easier than the other methods and sometimes the others don't work or you damage parts you will need later.

There are some pulley holders and and wrenches that can do the job, but not without frustration. I have a pneumatic fan clutch wrench set that works with your air hammer. Talk about aggravation elimination....
