O/T Tip for The Day

Just thought I'd pass this tip on for those of you who don't know and go camping.

If you take a bar of soap (unscented preferably) get it all lathered up and then put the lather on the outside of your pots and pans and let it dry, you can cook over an open wood fire and the black soot on the pan will wash right off next time in the wash water or with a wet rag.

Just to let you know, this "tip" is over 60 years old. We were doing that in Boy Scouts in 1950.

How about this one.....when its cold and you go camping take a big round woman with you to stay warm...You wont even need a campfire....

I'm all for camping......long's I can get to a bed 'long about 10:00, preferably my own, but in a motel if need be. If you've ever been truly miserable out under the stars (I mean MISERABLE) for a few nights, you'll understand. When I quit wearing Uncle Sam's uniform, I swore I'd NEVER stand in line again to eat; I've gone back on that a few times, but not on the 'camping'.

Closest I've ever been to camping was spending the night at a Holiday Inn in a room with no chiller.

That's an air conditioner for civilized folks.

Gee you sound like a guy from my Church . His whole family loves camping at our Church campgrounds . So he bought a nice camper & set it up on a permanent site for them all . He says he just loves camping with the family ; as long as he can go back home at dark to his bed . so that"s the way he camps . I used to enjoy camping myself . Started out in the back of our pickup , then tenting until we finally advanced to a small fully contained camper . The we jumped to a 25" with a nice large deck . Then a surprise divorce , she took the camper . So my bed"s my campsite now for the last 9 yrs .Njoy it while ya can is my theory .God bless, Ken

I was in the Boy Scouts in the 50's and have neaver quit camping. just love the out-of - doors with NO TV OR RADIO. Just in the woods with nature. As for the ones thet have neaver enjoyed sleeping out under stars I feel sorry for you. started camping in scouts in the 50's went to tents in the 60's , pop up camper in the 70's & still have a 23' pull camper now .

We were doing that in the Boy Scouts in the 1960's. Got Mom to go to the store and buy some Ivory Soap Flakes--seen them anywhere lately??--and then made a paste of 'em in an old pickle-relish jar.

Just had to remember not to use the same kind of jar for the shortening for cooking...making a mistake here could be a disaster!

I'm all for camping, too! As long as someone else is doing it. I had enough in the USMC. Don't own a tent, don't have a camper, and don't WANT to, either. If I GOT to, then I will. Until then, you guys can have all that fun to yourselves!

Yes I know, I learned it 30 years ago my self. But I've also learned at campsites not many know of it now days yet.

Any way Happy Campin to all!!!

Back in the day when I was in the scout's we used to hard boil a egg in a paper cup.on a campfire, use a wax coated paper cup, the cup will burn off to the water line. I don't think a starofoam (sp) cup would work. Dave F.

Guess I'm like a lot of folks here. Mom and Dad liked camping, Their last ride was a 32' Winnebago, always dragged us kids along. I've lived on the farm and in the sticks long enough to appreciate camping as a nice room at a Hampton Inn (like their beds) preferably with a hot tub, bar and good resturant. A zillion channels on the TV and high speed internet don't thrill me so I don't use them, I guess that must qualify as camping, right?

Odd that the camping topic came up.. We had a nice (rare) snowstorm, yesterday.. Today I drove up to the NC mountains, and went by the turnoff where my folks took us on many fun camping trips back in the 1960's.. Both Mom and Dad are gone now, but I have fond memories of many camping trips..
