OT Truck Brakes Failed Today

I have a 97 F150 and today when i left church i made it a couple miles out of town and started to slow down for a stop sign. As i was applying the brakes the pedal kept going all the way to the floor. It definetly had brakes but they faded out real fast. I drove home slowly and cant find any external leaks and it hasnt used any fluid.....Is it the master cyl? or should i look at something else too??

Thanks for any help.

I'd vote for the master cylinder. They can fail internally without leaking externally.

Same thing happened on my Olds a few months ago.

Agree with both other posts, 9 of 10 will be master cylinder. The oddball failure will be the tee to split front to back or some other rare issue that is letting air into the system without fluid loss, but EXTREMELY unlikely. MASTER CYLINDER.

Mama's 93' Sedan Deville had the same thing happen. The master cylinder was leaking out the back into the brake booster. No external leak.

My '98 F-150 blew the rear line just under the driver's seat due to rust. Had to replace the line from there to the rear brakes. better check your lines after you get the master cylinder fixed.

Was out at the auto parts place last week, and i saw new brake tubing, in made up lines, with a black coating on them to keep them from rusting. Man said they cost more, but a good investment, especially in our winter-time road salting areas. (PA)

Ive seen a few of these plastic coated lines fail close to the coupling nut.Ive just replaced a line that failed near the nut.The rest of the line looks perfect.I always put some grease on on the coupling nuts when replacing lines.Ford trucks have lines in areas you cant inspect.I notice that new trucks have lines exposed to road stone damage. My wifes 98 Merc had plastic coated brake lines. My 96 f150 does not have them.It has a lot of useless features that I would gladly trade for a safer brake system.

My 77 chevy pedal would go to the floor during hard braking.Brakes were fine otherwise.I put in a new master cylinder, that fixed it.The ford master cylinder is a wimpy looking thing.I hope you have been to a Ford dealer to get the fuse harness added to the cruise control power feed. The switch is not a stop lite switch,it interupts power to the cruise control.Took Ford 10 years to admit the switch was starting fires in trucks that were parked. Many caught fire on the road.If you have no fluid loss, change the master cylinder. Not a fun job, have the dealer do it if you have the bucks.
