96 Ram 2500, Cummins, 4wd. What axle ratio do I have when 60 mph is 1750 rpm in 5th gear manual tranny?

Go to a Dodge truck dealer and give them the serial number, the will print you off a line sheet which has all your trucks options. On the underside of the hood should be an option sticker. If it is still legible your axle ratio will be on it. The axles also have a tag attached to the cover bolts that has the ratio on it.

If the tags are gone/unreadable, raise both rear wheels off the ground and count the number of turns of the drive shaft in 1 turn of both rear wheels.
A 3.55 to 1 ratio would be slightly over 3 1/2 complete rotations of the drive shaft to 1 turn of the axle shafts. 5th gear is overdrive in most 5 speed transmissions.

I found that option tag. Funny I never saw that in ten years.
It says 3.5 and Dana 80.
Also says 4850 front axle. What does that mean?
Truck has 137k on it and all I repaired is lower front right ball joint at 131k.
Truck kind of struggles when towing over 10k in 5th gear. Lots of shifting down to 4th.

your owners manual will tell you to pull in 4th over 10,000. have same truck and use 4th all the time to keep rpms up also get better mileage

go to www.tstproducts.com get a number 10 plate and elbow and you won't struggle with 10k anymore and it will stay cool enough on the exhaust gas temperature

Yeah, I pretty much figured that out. Just use the 5th downhill, and slight downgrades. I get about 13mpg loaded. 17 empty.

Pop the top on the injection pump and slide the fuel plate ahead and you will get better milage and have alot more power . I have a 1997 and gained 2 mph. by doing that and can pull a 24 ft stock trailer full and a 24ft flat bed with 2 tractors and when you get in 5th gear rarely do I have to shift.

MwJ I'm opening up my email. I'd like to get more info on this. It's the AFC you are talking about?
