OT, dust control on farms

I agree,

It should not be dictated by the government in any way shape or form, but it sure as heck isn't ridiculous.

Any farmer with half a brain knows how to control the dirt. It is his business after all.

Just look at this mess.

The only easy way to keep dust down is to spread calcium on heavily used gravel lanes, they do the dirt roads here once in awhile.I farm too and If they told me I had to pay for it I would tell them to go f@*k themselves.I hope I live long enough to see these idiots get hungry lol.

The way it reads in the paper today . They are talking farming operations. Field work , combining etc. I can't see how your going making combining dust free ? Or cattle feed lots ? Sen Grassley here in Iowa Ripped into them pretty good , but they went ahead with this law. I don't know how the heck they plan on enforcing it ?

Then maybe they should wast time on legislating the amount of snow and ice we get every year. Snow and Ice causes millions of dollars in damage to people's health through car accidents, broken bones from falls, etc. It's very hazardous to our health and it kills many of our lovely animals. In fact, they shouldn't just try to reduce it, they shuld ban it totally. We would have no more ice and snow because our legislators were thoughtful enough to protect us from it's hazards.

Trying to control ag dust is just as rediculous!!!!!!!Jim

Government solutions are the problem.

I suppose no till would be the least dusty but that isn"t viable all the time nor everywhere. Isn"t dust just dirt in the air and what is more natural then dirt. We have a whole planet full of dirt.

Now I know whose fault this drought is and why we had 55+ mph winds last night with dust and 70 mph winds last weekend. The governments fault! They never let it rain enough and all their hot wind BS contributes more to global warming problem. SHUT UP Al Gore!

We saw that the other nite - it was a car that went by, blowing oil smoke!!! It was a windstill nite, and I am not kidding, we were in the fog for 2 miles!!! From one car, it was coming at us, not going with us. It just left a trail of smoke in the air for over 2 miles.

I've been around tired old tractors & all, but never had seen anything like that.

It was actually hard to see the smoke was so thick for the 1st 1/4 mile.

It's dust. It's caused by wind. I think we should legislate wind and have it blow on Monday's Wednesday and Friday. Then have rain every Sunday afternoon while I'm taking a nap.

dust control is a subject to occupy government morons that their supervisor just cant find anything else they are qualified to do at their skill level, we have the same regulation at the gravel pit i work for, since its now a"open pit mine" according to the gov, we now have to meet all the msha stuff too, dust control is a big item with these people but its silly as "control"requires a water truck with spray heads to drive on all the level areas of the mine and make things nice and wet several times a day, the funny part is they dont seem to be bothered by the dust that comes off the crusher while its operating, ours is fair size and makes 7 different products at once so the dust off it is more than any truck kicks up on the pit roads, but thats the gov for you, they cant figure a way to control it so now its ok

Joe, I vacuum on a tractor to suck up the dust? Are you friggin joking? If your serious, you really need to spend some time on a farm helping with spring tillage. also, what attracts you to this site? I cant remember if you have tractors, a hobby farm, or what. Seems like you are here more for looking for an arguement or preaching that you are right and everyone else is wrong. What's changed with you. You used to give decent replies and post, quite a while ago. Has something happened in your life recently that has caused you to become so bitter and rightous? Just asking cause if you need help, we're all here for you.

Someone should tell those nitwit gov an others atsmophere needs dust particles as neucli for rain an snow to form on!

Now Gordo, I am every bit as strong a supporter of zero tillage (or min. till.) as there is. But, please note that "dust" and "soil erosion by wind" are not necessarily the same thing. Obviously if a tilled field (or any other field) is blowing, you have dust. But the dust from behind a combine doesn't have much to do with soil erosion. I have been zero tilling on and off for 15 years now. I have noticed that when combining a zero tilled field vs. conventional, the zero till will have by far the biggest cloud of dust. This is simply because in zero till at harvest time you are rooting around in about three years of dryed out standing stubble.

Easy solution. Just do all the farming at night when no one can see the dust, or on weekends when no one at the goobermint is working. Who needs sleep or family time anyway?

I control mine if a neigbor gives me hell i make sure that the wind is blowing in his direction when discing. a field. Work real good to keep them from complaining.
Walt

Now lets see we do a lot hay here and I just can't figure out how big a vacuum it would take to cover the whole mower or baler. BUMMER
Walt

PS after you collect all the dust what do you do with it, take it to a special dump for field dust.

Are you brain damaged? How are you gonna put a vacuum on a tillage implement? Have you ever seen farm equipment run? Power plants and factories are a stationary closed system, that's why it works there. Dust collection would treble or quadruple the work time, actually increase pollution with the extra HP required to run the dust collection, and bankrupt the American agricultural industry. Your statement is one of the all time most ridiculous things I've ever seen on this site.

It is your farm blowing away and that is your business, but what gives you the right to emit dust onto your neighbors property, or causing poor visibility and traffic hazards on the public road next to your place ?

Even think that mabey this kind of nonsense is WHY farmers look for help?
I'm sure we could collect all the dust up... but what would we do with it if we did and how much would it cost?
The short answer... it would probably get dumped back in the field to blow around in the wind and be done until the country starved because there's be no farms left.

No-till does not at all reduce the dust when harvesting soybeans. But I know of no practical way to control the harvesting dust. Cutting the beans while it is raining is not at all practical. Not to mention the cost of drying afterward.

Dave, isn't it something, in Joe's response he tries telling us he represents common sense. Yet in one of his other posts he suggests adding big Hoovers to all our implements. This is just ANOTHER situation that shows us how "stable" Joe is. I have not seen any post where he adds anything to the discussion, just has to enlighten us with his "common sense".

Spraying used motor oil is a good way to control dust. Of course then you have some other EPA issue....but at least the dust is gone.

the same right i had before your type moved to the country and if that dont work smith and wesson has a sure cure

There have been 14 men in the history of man that have walked on the moon. Just because it can be done doesn't make it economically feasible. Yeah, if we had enough resources and money, we could build a bridge across the Pacific ocean. But how practical would it be and how long would it last.
Ok Einstein, tell us how you're gonna make this technology feasible, how much extra HP is it gonna take, how much more pollution from the bigger engine is there gonna be, how much is it gonna slow down production and how much extra will it cost. We're waiting....

Joe, how ya doin today, making friends or enemies or don't you really give a $-it,,yah thats what I thought.... did you get dug out yet from all the snow??

"but what gives you the right to emit dust onto your neighbors property, or causing poor visibility and traffic hazards on the public road next to your place ?"

What gives you the right to emit fumes from your vent stack on your house into the atmosphere? You should put an exhaust scrubber on it, at your expense of course. And why are you letting exhaust from your automobile spew all over town? It should be banned. And those leaves you let blow over in your neighbors yard, you need to put a giant net over your trees to contain them. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, right?

What does external_link have to do with this? If you're gonna be a bigot, at least have the conviction to use your name. The idiots at the EPA that came up with this are most likely abundant Caucasians anyway.

Hey! I got me a gov'ment job and I work nights! And every other weekend! But I am a water cop not a dust cop so I guess that don't count. My Gov'ment job working 12 hour night shifts does cut into my family time but it supports my family and my farming habit.

If the dust rules are going to be made by the same folks that make the water rules, God help us all.

Dave

Dustiest thing that goes on around is people spreading lime, a few years ago custom out fit spreading next to me turned about 3 acres of pasture grass white. Never crossed my mind to fuss about it.

Dave

one sure fired way of stopping it.. guaranteed to work,,,all the farmers dont plant just one season, when all the idiots shoot each other over the last loaf of bread that the magical food fairies make appear there, there wont be anymore said.
