For Brokenwrench

I have worked on Gehl skid loaders since I was 17 at a Gehl dealer and still do. Either one is hard to beat but I would go with the 6640. Newer style better cab and newer Deutz engine. Power All Tach is nice to have too. The 6640 has fewer hours but those Deutz engines are very good. I won"t be scared of the 4000 hours on the 6635. Is the 6640 an E Series? If it is or not it don"t make any difference really. Also is the power all tach a universal or is it the Gehl style hooks because the ones that are the universal can break the cylinder ram that latches the pins. Only happened to a few because some farmers would get feed jammed in there and force the pins down to latch on cold days when the feed was frozen causing the cylinder to break or something bending. If it has the Gehl style hooks I would not be worried about it. Either skid loader is hard to beat. To me when it comes to skid loaders Gehl is the best and I worked on any many other brands and used many others too. On my farm all I own is Gehl’s and I collect some older ones and restore them. This year in March I will buy two new ones again and trade the two units in that I have. New ones will be a 5240 and a 4240. If you have more questions please post. Also are you buying them trough a dealer?

Hey,
Thanks for the reply and the info. Must a been something weird going on when I posted.

You re telling me just what I need to here. The 6635 is from a local dealer that I know well. They have serviced it since new.
The 6640 is from an equipment sales place about 100 miles from me. I don t know anything about them, but wouldn t have work done there anyway.

Good to here that your not worried about the hours on the 6635. My decision may have to be made partly on what I can afford to spend. I should say what I can justify spending for the amount of use.

I really like the gehls for how accessible they are to work on. I had to put the coupler from the flywheel to the pump in my 4635. I think it took us under three hours, whole job. I cheated though. I have a 12000 LB 4 post truck hoist. One guy on top, one on the bottom. Heck, I run it on the hoist to change oil.

I really like my 4635, but just need a bigger machine. It seems like I can get a better buy on the 6635-6640 than on a 5635-5640. Mine has 2600 hrs on it, I knew the guy that bought it new, thats why I have it. It s been taken care of well. Anything can happen, but I don t want to get into a situation where I m going bigger and newer, but giving up the reliability I have with mine. I can t afford to keep both.

How reliable is the 2 spd in these things? Can you work in high, like moving round bales off a field?
How does the cab door work if you re using an auger, can you take it off easily?? Might be a stupid question, but never had one with a door.
