O/T Skin Cancer

At 66 the life time in the sun has finally caught up to me. After having surgery on my lip to remove a cancer spot I go to have a check up more often. Seams like every time they need to freeze off something new. Now the doctor wants me to put this cream stuff on my face that will remove anything else she can't see. I guess it makes a mess of your face for a few weeks, like you have been in a bar fight and lost. Has anyone used this stuff? stan

Yes, sir! I believe you are referring to Efudex cream. That is actually a brand name. It can be bought as a generic.

Unfortunately, I am all too familiar with the stuff. Last week I just completed a thorough treatment on both forearms. Man, that stuff will get you red! I go in for a checkup in a couple weeks. Lovely!

I will say this. The cream seems to work on areas where there might be quite a few pre-cancerous lesions, especially small ones. Somehow, only those little spots are affected. Your normal skin doesn't really react to the cream. Can't imagine how that is, but it's a fact. The areas that do react will get red, then eventually open up. That's when you want to stop putting on the cream. Then, they will scab over and heal on their own. Done.

This takes a while. For me it usually takes three weeks or so. YMMV. Still, when it is over you don't usually get any scars. I have a few scars from the freezing or the freezing and scraping.

I guess we can be thankful the doc can manage all this stuff early on because it grows pretty slowly.

Yes, USE IT.
It is far better to get those pesky pre cancer spots with the cream now than to loose large areas of skin later.
Best of luck to you

Everybody dark, light, no history, should see a dermatologist, probably once every ten years starting in their teens.

And they can be minor things too that you might not even notice. You might think a crusty one is just a little wart and they are a particular kind that needs checked.
Most insurance will cover an annual check-up and it's far cheaper to fix problems early.

My grandfather watched everyone in his family die from cancer. Starting with his youngest child and only daughter, Joan. Melanoma took her at 34. She left 3 small children. His wife, bone cancer, was next. Then the middle child, my uncle at 61. My father, his first born son, colon cancer at 69. He finally died of lung cancer, although he never smoked in his life, at 101. He was a lonely, heart-broken man, even though my cousin, his granddaughter, was caring for him.

USE THE CREAM!!!!!

I use UV Lotion every day and still have lost the end of my nose and the top of my right ear as well as lots of freezing spots here and there on my face and neck.I recommend a wide brimmed hat and lots of Lotion.

Melanoma 1988. Had a slab of meat like a small football removed from my back. No radiation, no chemo, no cream or lotion. Small and bleeding. Had what looked like another in 1999. Went to dermatologist, insurance was insufficient for biopsy. Meantime prayed a lot with fellow christian from job. Two weeks later dried up, fell off, left pure white skin underneath. Praise the healing Lord for that. Hope never to see another one. Melanoma could go to brain or lungs, also. Docs say stay out of sun. U.S.Navy study says skin cancer is caused by lack of sun. Go figure. Glad to be 65 and alive. Got a lot of bad sunburns as a kid. Dave
