John Deere 50 Useability

How useful is a 50 today? I've found one that has a factory 3-point and I believe live PTO (the shaft is offset a little bit to the flywheel side. Just looking at pictures). It also has a 5-6 foot bush-hog on the back.

It looks like original paint, and sheetmetal is stated to be straight. Rear tires are unmatched but decent tread, fronts are getting worn. Asking $2500. I can't decide if that looks like a good deal. Significant other said I was crazy.

Any thoughts? Thanks

Useability of old tractors is much more related to features than to the make or model of the tractor itself. Live or independent PTO, 3 point hitch (preferably with draft control) and power steering are what you should be looking for. Power steering not as crucial if its a tricycle. I'd say you'd get a lot of use out of that 50, and resale is good on the old 2 cylinder JD's. I'd go for it.

Live PTO would have a hand clutch lever on the right side of the tractor seat, near the rocker arm housing. If you don't want her, I do! Assuming in good condition, would ba a wonderful tractor for lots of uses. Practically grew up on one.

The Model 50 equiped with 3 point, Live PTO & Power Steering is a great little tractor. Ours run a Hesston small Sq bailer with a Bale Accumulator all summer. Not fast but sure made good bales
