O/T V Belts

I have a chipper with 6 groves in the drive pulley's for a 3/8 in belt width. If I replace with 6 individual belts will the belts start slapping? The distance between the shafts is about 4 1/2 ft. I can get a one piece belt, but it is very expensive. I found individual belts on ebay for a lot less. Thanks for any info. stan

My hammer mill has 6 belts and I haven"t ever heard them do any slapping. What makes you think that would occur?

We had the same question about the drive belt on the feed grinder years ago. The explanation we were told was if we used individuals, one would flip over if a kernal of corn or something like that went under it and then pretty soon another would flip. Then the remaining belts couldn't pull the load. Jim

<<<<has 6 belts and I haven"t ever heard them do any slapping>>>>>Probably because they were a matched set in the first place.

Belts off epay might be both ends of the tolerance value (or even more!)

Regards, RAB

V belts have "Mold marks on each belt. belts from the sace mold will be the exact same length. This helps keep slapping to a min.

Had the same problem on our grain vac. You have to buy a matched set of belts. We got them at the local implement dealer and it was high so look out.

Most belts made by a reputable maker, will be within a certain tolerance....+/- a nanometer. If all are replaced together, they should all work fine.

Given time, all belts stretch and erode. You sure as hell can't expect one 5 years old to be the same length a new one is....even if they are marked the same.

Why some of you think that products sold on ebay are inferior....I'll never understand. Are the NOS John Deere parts sold there...defective? NO! Neither are the Gates belts....or the myriad of other items offered for sale. Most of that stuff comes from closed dealers and shops, or people like me who bought it and never used it.

in my job as ind mechanic change a lot of belts
when a power band ( multi belts in 1 peice ) is not available just replace it with a set of v belts prefer to get a matched set as they are all the same exact length but usually just end up with 4,5 or 6 off the rack & install them
tighten them up and after the slightly longer ones stretch out they usually all end up about the same & share the pulling only time you usually get problems with belts flipping is if there is mis-alignment

The belt on the RIGHT is the type of belt he now has, and he's wondering if multiple, individual belts will work instead of the bonded-together multiple belt:

It's the caliber of some of the people on ebay, and ebay itself that is the problem - not really the merchendise.....

Gave up on ebay a few years ago.....

Belt slapping doesn't necessarily make any noise but it can but it's actually belt flopping between the pulleys.

I have heard engine fan v-belts sound like a rod knocking. We put water or glass cleaner on the belt and it was quiet for a short time. Sure had me worried.

You need to purchase a MATCHED SET of belts,
from a reputable dealer or industrial/bearing
supply house. Don't expect anyone at TSC to
know what the term "Matched Set" means. Anyone
who can sell you a matched set can order you one
with the backing. All of the major belt Mfrs
make them.

Can you afford the downtime, potential damage and cost of purchasing the one peice belt if six individuals don't work?
The manufacture spent the extra dollars for the one peice belt instead of six single belts for a reason.
If it was a clean enviroment such as an industrial air compressor, probably ok. As previously stated. A flying chip that lands in a groove and rolls a belt, that's trouble.
When installing any belt. Alignment in every direction and angle is absolutley critcal.

You should use Gates PowerBand belts made like a web. They solved our problem when using 5 or 6 small belts on an engine. Hal

Here's a pic of Gates Power bands. Hal

The belt I need is a 3V-1250 I think its a gates hi power. The belt on the chipper now is a one piece, but only has 3 ribs, who ever had it before me put on the wrong one. You have any sources. Stan

Get that in a Gates PowerBand Predator. We started using these in 1965. It will solve your belt problem. When using 3 or 4 single vee belts
if one happens to break or kick off it will throw off the other belts. Hal

Most belts made today are much closer to the ideal tolerances, due to better manufacturing equipment. I have a good source, here in MD, In Beltsville, MD, kinda ironic, aint it? Anyway its Columbia rubber in the sunnyside industrial park. Their prices are consistently 1/3 less than O.E.M. dealer prices, sometimes even less.

Had a problem with 3V belts flipping over on a Gehl hay conditioner years ago. Probably a worn idler or something else a little out of line. Gates Power Band style belt fixed the problem, but the belt drive system was marginal in heavy hay.

I forgot to add this to my post below. Which major tractor manufacturer led the R&D and held the first patents for what are now called V belts?
