OT: TIME TO INVEST IN A NEW GRILL

I always see good advice from readers when it's asked for, so tell me about any propane grills you've owned and what you like and don't like about them.

It's time to buy something more than a throw-away that will only last 2-3 years, but I certainly can't afford to go off the deep end.

To give you some idea I would LIKE to get a Weber Genesis which is highly rated by Consumer Report, but it costs from $600 to $700 depending on the store. I'd rather get something in the $300 to $400 range and was wondering if any of you have a recommendation.

The bigger the better.

I bought a Weber Genesis Silver 3 or 4 years ago...I'd hate to think about how many cows, hogs, and chickens it's cooked. It's been great and I think it'll be great for some time to come. Only problem I've had is the right hand side gets hotter than the left, if you call that a problem. I just put the thicker cuts on the right, thinner ones on the left, and it all works out anyways. If I'm not mistaken, it was about $400 at Lowes when I bought it. The silver series is a little cheaper.

Where's the cheese and bacon hiding for them burgers. Darn it, now I'm gonna have to head to Jack N jim's for lunch. I got the craving.

Dave that is actually pork sausage.

The sausage was donated for a benefit breakfast we put on.

Had a bit to much grease in it and every once in a while we would have to rinse the grates down with water. Thus the flareup from the water.

I built this grill in 1990 and do about 5 or 6 events a year for big crowds.

Wonder if you have to have a special license to cook on that thing? Bet you do to pull it.

That there is big, I don't care who you are.

I'm with Gary.....build your own; can't find the pics of my big grill; they're lost somewhere in the bowels of this computer (I've tried grouping by topic, by year, by event, etc; but I still have trouble coming up with specific pictures). This is my intermediate-sized grill......my wife calls it my Jed Clampett Special.

like you, I was tired of replacing the thin stainless steel burners every year or two. Then I saw one at the store that had cast iron burners, and I've been very happy with it. Four main burners, a side burner, and a back rotissere burner, for a shade under $400. The brand is Grill Zone. I have not seen one in a store since that has the cast iron burners, even in the same brand. It might take some searching.

I bought a new one a couple of years ago, starts with S (not at home, so can't go out and look)- I'd recognize the name if I saw it. Hate it- the little hood thingies over the burners prevent it from ever getting hot enough to actually grill something- it just bakes it. I can get hamburgers cooked, after a fashion, if I take the hood thingies off completely. I'm hoping it will be attacked and destroyed by rabid wolverines soon, so I have an excuse to get a different one.

Weber Q.Small ,they make different sizes, simple. Very heavy cast iron grate will never rot out.Burner guaranteed 5 years, made out of stainless round tubing, not some stamped together piece of junk burner.I clean the holes in it once a year.
Inexpensive and on top of all that the wife just loves it.
Sincerely, from the past owner of several of those box store junkers.

Can't add anything that hasn't been said already, EXCEPT you are making me hungry!!!!!!!!!!

Got a test today, can't eat until after 2:15pm. Bad timing since today is fat Tuesday. ARRRRR.

My advice again is to make your own; pictures are not the best, but you get the idea. Got a couple of different size pots to hang on the hooks to cook beans, etc. It sets out in the weather all Winter; needs a coat of high-temp paint...........

I bought a "Aussie" from Menards in west Mi. Cast iron grates and cast iron burners and can also use charcoal. The nice part about using the charcoal is you light the burners for a couple minutes to light the charcoal no lighter fluid needed. I think I paid less the $400.00

I bought a gas grill seven years ago that is still doing fine. Never replaced a burner. It is a Phoenix brand and has a stainless steel plate over the burners so grease never drips on the burners. Plate is removeable for cleaning. It was in the $400-$500 range.

Char Broil I bought one fro $5 at an auction.
The thing wasnt broken, just congested from lack of attention. Pressure washed and ran for 8 years. Needed a burner (Kept out in the weather all the time) New burner 14$. Got a different one for free. No issues with it, (again cleanup and go) Charbroils seem pretty indestructable. JimN

Never build a smoker and put it on a trailer. Everybody want's to borrow it. I had a stainless drum given to me and built it upright and on 6" caster wheels so i could roll it around the cook shed. MOAS (mother of all smokers) really works good. Outhouse is yard art only. I used stainless from a scrap yard so everything including the grills should outlast me, my son, grandsons etc. David...........

Dave, I don't get there to often anymore. Last time was early December. I've got a lot of family there, so I'm usually visiting. But sometime it would be nice to meet. I'll leave my e-mail open.

Personally I thought the old bar was about the best one on earth. I go to the new one and reminise about what used to be.

I am sending this from my phone and can't find the spot to leave my e-mail open. We'll see if this works.

Grills are real expensive here (a 60 buck Weber sells for 170 bucks in a German store). The PX got a big shipment in and I was thinking about getting a gas grill. My buddy bought one first and gave it to his FIL who used it a couple of times as a grill then as a warmer for stuff he cooked on a charcoal grill. Said the food wasn't as good (??????).

Jack and Jim's in Duelm?

Was always a popular stopping point on the way up to Mille Lacs. There or the Refuge in Orrock.

They serve food? ;-) Seems I always drank my supper at those places.
