OT Transmission in a 1997 Dodge Pickup

Can anyone tell me what model of transmission a 1997 Dodge 1500 has in it. It is a automatic, 3 speed with overdrive. The engine is a 360, and it is a 4x4. Also where on the transmission would you look for the ID tag? Thank you for any help.

You should have a 46RE in the truck.Transmission identification numbers are stamped on the left side of the case just above the oil pan gasket surface.

what transmission was in a "95 and what came after the "99 models?

I have a 96 and had it rebuilt once....and once is enough..damned expensive.

I have a 96 1500 4X4,with the 360. Had the tranny rebuilt once. Dodge used 3 or maybe 4 transmissions in that year. Found that out when I had to replace the torque converter. I just called the shop that rebuilt mine for the transmission number. Can"t remember where the ID is on them, transmission repair shop or dealer will tell you.

90-95 was a 46RH (518). Had a mechanical governor.

96-98 was a 46RE. mechanically the same as the 46RH but with an electronic governor solenoid and sensor.

99-03 46RE. Same setup just some electrical changes. Thats why they don t interchange. You could put a 99-03 trans in a 96-98 if you changed the internal electrical solenoids and harness.

does yours hold in second when its cold too? [ wont upshift] untill the fluid warms up, mine does that but its always done that its weird and annoying, but doesnt seem to hurt anything, i got 220,000 on it

Mine does that….. below about -25 it refuses to ever change out of second. I switch the O/D off and that drops the revs a little, but it is annoying and likes to drink fuel! It has always done this. Above -25 it works fine. New fluid and filter and band adjustment has no effect. I assume its an electronic thing….or perhaps it just doesn’t like to go out in the cold..
