Installing 404 combine engine into a 4020

Anyone install a combine 404 engine into a 4020?This would be a later 404 with the injection pump on the front right side rather than towards the back like the 4020. The engine has the threaded holes in the block at the front for the hydraulic pump mount. Anyone have first hand experience? Any problem with using the combine oil pan?

Thanks

i just put a combine 404 into a 4230 it was a fairly simple swap i kept the turbo and made a custom air intake so it would look original. i also had the late model combine motor. on the 4020 though youll have to look to see if the blocks are the same i believe the early 404(4020) and the late 404(some time in the mid 70's they switched) use a different block with a a different bolt pattern.should be able to look at where it bolts to clutch housing and tell maybe measure to make sure. if your blocks do match you will need to use the tractor oil pan and the sump(sump in combine doesnt go down quite as far. there are bolts in the oil pan that go into the clutch housing combine doesnt have these on its pan.

If it is any help, I have a 105 combine gas motor in my 64 4020. As I recall(conversion was a dozen years ago).
I had to use the front pulley for hyd pump drive, tractor manifolds, throttle linkage, water pump, flywheel.
The gas engine combine pan bolted up to the tractor transmission. I just added a 1/2 90 degree street elbow to get the pan drain pointed down. I like the less mess of changing the combine motor's spin on oil filter compared to the tractors cartridge filter in the pan.

I asked the owner of a combine salvage yard about putting combine diesel engines in a tractor. He said about the only feedback from someone doing this conversion, was that the combine crankshaft has more bolt holes than a tractor flywheel and that the unused holes must be plugged or an oil leak will result. Both the yard owner and I got this information second hand, so check before you act on this advice.

Just John's in North Vernon Indiana specializes in this conversion. They are very helpful and can advise you exactly what you will need. There number is 812-591-2144. Hope this helps...

Friend of mine did it. Can't give any specifics, but it was out of a 7700? Either way, it would roll the smoke like crazy and if you jumped from 6th to 8th when it was wide open, you would pop a pretty good wheelie. I never did that. Him and another guy told me it would. Make a strong tractor I suppose. Good Luck.
