Watched the opray on Sunday morning and what a sorry show. Other than Randy Travis whose voice is almost shot all the rest were hippy types singing pop songs. Is all the country songs gone from the opray or does it not sell . I still buy country music dont you guys?

Been to the Opray a few times. Thought it was really nice but your right, they don't make country music like they use to. How does that George Jones song go, Who's going to fill their shoes.Apparently nobody.

Tell you somethin fellers. About two years ago I bought a satellite radio for my truck. Only place I know you can listen to what you want to. I listen to channel thirteen. Hanks place. All oldies. Whenever I go back to standard radio anlisten to the new music types makes me want to turn the radio off. Bernie Steffen

Wife and I went to a theater where live Ragtime music was going. Enjoyed the show and had some first class seats. Do like the Grand but ..well guess like me. Those real good singers have now age well and some good players have passed on mostly.

I have XM radio in my truck. Talk about great old (not that old) music (50's - 70's). I listen to Willies Place, roadhouse, and Bluegrass junction. I'm going to put satelite radio in my shop too. I can't stand this garbage they call music today. I'll have to check out Hanks place.

...not the opry, but we saw "Merle" in concert a couple weeks ago. The Hag has still got it!!! thankfully, they're not All gone yet ...D

The Grand Ole Opray ain't to grand anymore It is a sorry excuse for music. Its more like who can get the loudest and jump around the most. And those music awards on tv are even worse. I just listen to my old tapes and remember when.

Oliver, "Willies Place" and "Hanks Place" on xm is the same station. Awhile back they just changed names for some reason. The station, channel 10, that's now called "Roadhouse"(I think?) is the same one that used to be called "America". Others were changed too- the one that's now called "Outlaw Country" useta be called something else, like "Alt Country" or something. Don't know why the names changed, but it's still the same music on 'em.

When XM and Sirius merged, they combined similar shows. You hear the same thing on one channel on XM and another on Sirius. What used to be cross country on XM is now outlaw country (my favorite channel) on both XM and Sirius, Hank's place on XM is now Willy's place, etc.

I listen to a local country radio station on Saturdays. They play all the good old tunes. Very few commercials too. It is on the web at KXRB.com.

It's because most people can can't listen to endless wailing about stories of loss, suffering, misfortune and about how good it was in the old days.

As the Public School system has dumbed down the population the quality of the Arts has gone down with it.Country music now is what a really bad garage rock band was 30 years ago

A while back I decided that real country was now Blue Grass and mainstream country was similar to rock with some pop and rap thrown.
I quit listening to mainstream music when disco came along and usually have my truck tuned to consertive talk.
Here's a link to a good station that plays 85% classic country -
Bluegrass classic country

Went to n
Louise Mandrell show 3 yrs ago in Pidgion Forge, was nice but not what I expected. a lot of jumping around.

Branson Missouri is where a lot of entertainers went to. They could stay there for months on end and didn't have to live out of a suitcase they said.
They also said the last one out of the opray to be sure and turn the lights off.

This was said in Missouri 20 years ago!

We were in Branson last summer (2008) It has really changed. They are getting an airport now which is supposed to open this month. There is so much to see there and many shows that you can't take them all in in a week. They even have a Titanic exhibit there. Looks like the ship on the outside and it was constructed on the inside the same way even with the grand staircase.
I bought a two DVD set on the titanic from their gift shop. On these DVD's they say they think the sinking of the Titanic was a scam to collect insurance money. There is proof of an explosion that occured on the ship, maybe due to the cold water rushing in on the hot boilers. It's interesting.

Like the song says if it aint got momma, gettin drunk, jail, trains and trucks it aint country.Oh yeah Randy Travis did say his one song sold 50 million records, seems a awful lot of country music lovers.

I'll go along with you on that. Bluegrass is the ONLY form of country anymore. As for the mention of Branson,I LOVE that place. We went a few years ago, rented a cabin on the lake. SO MUCH to do,we went to the office and asked if we could stay there and rent it for 3 more nights. That place is fantastic.

Just don't EVER let anybody tell you that Pigeon Forge Tennessee is ANYTHING like Branson. What a HOLE. That place is nothing but a Bed and Breakfast for Dollywood. Nothing to see or do there, just hotels and fast food joints. The traffic is unbearable. Honest to God,we got into town at noon on a Sunday, our hotel was 3 blocks away,we got to the hotel at twenty minutes to four! That's no lie!

People have been complaining since the "Nashville Sound"of the early eighties. It was considered too pop to traditionalists.Thats when you heard Mickey Gilley,Crystal Gail, etc. One guy from that era whom I thought was real good was John Conlee[Rose Colored Glasses].Anyway once you hit forty no new music will be aimed at you because your not the major market share. What gets produced is what sells not what you may like.If you saw hippies on stage maybe you used a time machine earlier that day.The entire music industry is changing to where even CDs are dying in sales.Kids at work plug in the ipods to the Milwaukee radios and you listen to their crap all day.One store, Barnes and Noble, has a system where you can listen to the tracks before buying.Seems I pretty much know what I want.I have found Kitty Wells in the used vinyl section.George Jones in the discount bin.I dont just have country but all types of music. When I went to Nashville I went to Reiman auditorium and didn even chek out the new opry.I wanted to see where Lorretta Lynn stood and sang for the first time not some new commercial venue."I have sung at the Grand Ole Opry" Go listen to some Patsy youll feel better.

Yes,through XM on Direct TV. Up in the 800 channels. I only know that Bluegrass junction is channel 812.

Goes to show the problems in society how that people will pay for and listen to misery.
"Coal Miner's Daughter" is another "boo hoo” wailing and whining session that made lots a bucks.

good ol days we had Ernest Tubb, Lefty Frazzle, thats what we called him, Bob Wills, Hank Williams the first, and the list goes on and on. All these guys sang and played their music on stage until they died, and you never got tired of listening to them. But it seems these younger so called stars just don't have what it takes, after a couple of years they hang it up and no one seems to ever miss'em.

George Strait and Alan Jackson did a duet a few years ago called "Murder On Music Row" as I recall the name being. I know it was on Jackson's "Drive" CD, and don't know what on Strait's CD. Know that both sang it on their own concert tours. Great song...don't know how them two didn't get into big trouble or black listed with the record lables for that one. Ever hear it? Basically was about how country music was murdered by the like of big hair country rock-n-roll...and even Merle couldn't survive today and all for big $$$, not quality country. If you ever get a chance to hear it, it pretty much nails it.

I love my rock-n-roll too, and was always a big fan way back when of Heart, especially Nancy Wilson because she could wail on a Fender Strat or Tele with the best of them. Years ago she pointed out how MTV killed rock-n-roll and the radio, using her sister Ann as an example. Ann could make your ears pop when she sang, and had a great voice, but loud. More than one Heart concert left me deaf for a couple of days. But Ann's problem was that she gained weight and according to MTV became unpresentable to view. Well, no MTV videos equated to no radio play because things changed to where had to get past MTV to get to the radio, and I'm certain the same can be said about country music these days...no flashy videos on CMT or ??? equate to no or limited radio play. As Nancy said back then, "Its supposed to be about the music, Stupid". I'd say she nailed that one too.

I've got Straits cd with "Murder on Music Row" on it and it is one of the best he has ever made. Never made air time on any radio stations that I know of. Wonder why since it reflects the opinion of thousands of REAL country music lovers. Maybe we all need to start calling in for it to be played and it might bring it out of the moth balls and put it up front where it always belonged. Let's try it ! post back with your results.
