a few days ago i lost the brakes on my john deere 301a, the hydraulic fluid was about a half gallon low so i topped it up, and bled the brakes, i got the left one back just fine, but i cant get anything out of the right bleeder, the manuel [ i&t] says when this happens, to remove the right foot plate and take off the plug on the top of the master cylinder, and see if it has fluid in it, i did that, it was full, the right pedal will push fluid out of the rear of the master cylinder and thru the line, but not out the bleeder on top of the axle, the bleeder is clear, i have left brake just when i use left brake only, when i step on both pedles both go to the floor, does anybody know what i need to do for this thing? ive kind of diagnosed myself into a corner

It might be time to clean the valve out, you can leave it on the tractor. The brake valve gets its oil from the steering system and since its a low spot in the system alot of junk settles in the valve. If you can look on jdparts to get a picture of the parts it might help. You already have one plug out can you see a slotted plug in there? Remove that and the plug underneath the valve housing and see how much junk comes out. Do this to both sides. One top hole might have a frost plug to remove instead of the oring plug you probraby removed. The slotted plug has a spring and T piece and the bottom plug has a spring and ball that likes to get away. When bleeding don't depress the pedal all the way since I've seen the slotted plug/spring & T get damaged which you might have accidently did already. Also maybe a brake line is pinched shut. good luck chris

matthies,
Are you sure JD utilities get the brake oil from the power steering? That's not the way I remember but I don't have a Tech manual. I thought a hole cast in trans housing from sump to brake valve was where the oil made it to valve. Please correct if I wrong.

Matthies,
I found a JD utility tech manual I'd forgotten I had. It states that the brake reservoir is filled by the trans oil pump via the trans lube circuit.

Tx Jim, you're right! Grabbed a manual myself. Guess I wasn't thinking right after the six pack I had. I looked in a 410 loader/backhoe manual. Ericlb's pump must be working if he gets at least one brake working. Eric should manually fill the brake valve if its low and try to bleed the brake to see if the problem is in the valve or maybe the pump.
