OT/ painting stalls (whitewashing ??)

Hey folks,
anyone know what is mixed (and how much) to paint barn walls that will be in contact with animals? Is it just hydrated lime and water? Or something else? Looking to brighten things up a little this year.

Thanks, Dave

We hire it done every few years- (sorry- don't think they will be able to do your place over in Germany) They hook up a hose to one of our faucets, and dump bags of lime (pretty sure it's not the same stuff we put on the floor) into some sort of a mixer.

They then have a pump that puts it under pressure and they spray it on. Looks like just a peice of pipe that has the end hammered flat, with a ball valve for the on/off.

Some guys do a fast job, some guys do a good job. The ones we use seem to do a very good job and don't take any more time than the next guys. I think they can do 2 barns in a day if they really want to, but there aren't many barns left anymore so I'm sure they don't rely on just white washing to make a living. Maybe I'm wrong.

Dave, what is wrong with latex paint ? In Germany is it $100 a gallon, 100 Euros a liter ?
How is that new horse doing?

Quote wikopedia:
"Additives that have been used include water glass, glue, egg white, Portland cement, salt, soap, milk, flour, earth, blood.

Whitewash is sometimes coloured with earths to achieve colours spanning the range of broken white, cream, yellow and a range of browns.

Historically pig's blood was added to give the colour Suffolk pink, a colour still widely used on house exteriors in some areas of the UK. Animal blood also further reinforces the earth based substrate to some degree."

I own and operate R & W Whitewash Service here in ne Pa ,, Don- wi has it about right , it not the same as what is put on floors , i use what they call hot lime , quick lime or pulverized calcium oxide ,, i use an I R 185 cfm air compressor to blow the cobwebs and dust down , then mix about 1 lb per gal of lime , spray it through a bean royal pump , i use a 3 /8" pipe with a ball valve and flat fan nozzle ,, when the lime mixes with water it DOES GET HOT be carefull ,it ill not look white as its sprayed on , give itsome time to dry !! not many farms left in this area so my territory is getting further from home all the time !!and i only know of two others that whitewash in about a 300 mile radious . hope i helped you any questions just ask , have a great day , Wayne

Paint's not cheap but it's affordable. I want things to breath also so would like to go the whitewash way. The majority of the barn still has the clay stucco, so it's easier and quicker to finish up what's there and latex wouldn't last long on that type stucco.

New horse is doing fine. 'Bout ready to lose her virginity..... Our stallion is in luuuuuuuuuuuv

forgot to mention you can use hydrated lime but it wil not be as bright or last as long as the hot lime will are you planing on doing the inside of the barn or out side ?? i have done a few outside walls couple concrete blocks and one wood , they looked pretty good. should be done every couple years .

Inside the stalls, walls are cement block with wood dividers and fronts. Barn is timber frame and stucco, that will be outside when it's finished. Probably spring for paint or white stucco for it (????). Main thing is the stalls and maybe some inside walls in the barn itself. Just have figure out what the hot lime is called here. Is it a big deal to mix it and paint it with a brush?

Thanks, Dave
