Tobacco Farming

Here's a patch of tobacco growing on my place in Abingdon, Virginia. Don't grow no more since the buy out. DH

That's some nice looking tobacco. A lot of the farmers up here in Mass. & CT. still grow shade and broadleaf. I helped cut and spear about 4 acres of broadleaf last summer for a guy. I have done my fair share of topping, cutting, and spearing since I was 16. Always hated spearing. I have a nice scar in the middle of my handing from a spear. Didn't go quite through to the other side, but sure came close. The Jamaicans laughed for quite a while about the little white boy stabbing his hand. Got to drive tractor with a rack the rest of the day though so it all worked out.

How many do you want? With the tax increases Im going to put out either a plant bed or a few float trays.

What is the date on that picture? We just had the township, county and provincial highways re-opened late this morning after everything had been snowed in.
The Ontario government yesterday announced a buy out for the tobacco growers here. $1.35 a lb or something and not allowed to ever grow the stuff again.
Or continue to grow but under license and direct to the tobacco companies for what they offer to pay...........

Where are you in KY?

Like hayman said, I'll give you some but they will be dark.

Need to get mine ordered. I always buy a few thousand too many just to reset with.

I am in Webster Co.

I think it was last year when I heard on the news that "Wackey Tobaccie" past corn up as the #1 cash crop in the USA...

I am pretty far west of you. Be hard to send'm that far. There should still be some folks up there raise'n burley. If noth'n else you can buy seeds from a local co-op. Start'm in the next month and you can set'm out in mid may.

Good luck.
