Bought 1967 4020 cheap and was going to slap it together and make alittle on it. But just couldn't stop. New batteries,cables,12v starter, alt,Lights, fuel gauge, injectors, bater boxes,Front rims and tires, rebuild rear end, rebuild front axle, new tierods, new stearing wheel, rear weights, roll bar and topper, new side sheilds, new muffler, new hood rubbers, new tach, new 3pt cable,2 new 2nd remote box lines, changes all oil and filters, new antifreeze. Well I think thats all. Just need to clean and paint. A cheap tractor that's not so cheap anymore. Bought it with the rear end out for $3000.00 And now have close to $8000.00 in it. Should have just bought a $8000.00 tractor. But I guess we've all done this before.

I bought the tractor to fix just enough to sell, But just couldn"t stop. Now I"m going to keep it and use it along with the rest or the good deals that I"ve bought over the years. I was just woundering if I"m the olny one that just can"t stop fixin. Every time I think I"m going to turn a little profit on one of these deals I end up having to keep them because I have way to much in them. Just wonder if anyone had the same problem.

It just dont stop does it,I think its a malfunction of self-control. Bought 4010 $5500 good runner good tires, Needed paint fenders and work on steering motor used it for discing and haying. Fixed steering JD dealer $1300. Put in the shop 2 weeks ago to paint,OH GOD please stop me. UPS shows up with new fenders, side screens, frontgrille, seat, and decal set. Its just the that infectious desease TRACTOR-I-DID-IT. Pride in your acomplishment and your toys

Been there, done that, doing it now! Holy cow, how long has this thing has been in the shop!

I guess that's why I now own 8 tractors & only own 2 acres of land. I have sold a couple from time to time but it's sooo hard to let them go after all the time & effort. But when the BOSS says get rid of some before you get anymore toys, something just naturally has to go.

They call that a labor of love..I think everyone has done it....I will look and look until I can find a deal to where I cant lose money...but that takes a lot of time and drives everyone nuts around me....

Sounds like every tractor DEAL I get ,, Don't matter what color it be 'round here , YANMAR , DEEERE , MF or CASE they ALL will require GREEN to keep it going ,, JUst Enjoy the Quest, and Hope you can Work your Money back out of Em

Hey Billion, if I can suggest something, take a look at the precleaner above the air cleaner housing. By the looks of yours it original, wouldn't hurt replace it while the hoods off. Your tractor might run a little cleaner, this part is missed by some during servicing. chris

you're doing ok. it's not like putting $8000 into a tractor that will only be worth $3000 in the end. you probably have donated the labor, but at least you know what you have in the end.

i put $5000 into an oliver 88 not counting labor, planning on using it and i do use it some, but not enough to justify the expense. i ended up with a cadillac that does the work of a volkswagen.jim

Ive seen pictures of that 4020 with the front axal off and it looked good. Just wondering whats wrong with it. Also wondering if you fixed the steering on that 3010. I got to get my 3020 steering valve fixed because its leaking.

Interesting hearing what you have to say about your stuff. I bought an old 59 Case 311-B. Did end up putting more money in it then I had plan for it. Lots of labor to! But in the end when I sold it. I really did not brake even on it and lost a bit. But did get a lot of fun riding it around with my brush hog on the back.

I had the axle off because of a leak up in the front bolster. Replaced the tie rods and the pivot bushings in the front axle as well as the arm that the tie rods attach too. It has a small coolant leak where the thrmostats go so I changed them and installed new gaskets after cleaning up the housings. Going to install new hoses while I have it apart. Has a small oil leak on the oil cooler. Need to work on putting some new gauges. Someone put in the wrong light switch. Installed the second remote valve. Had to move the rear wheel and broke a wedge on the left side. Hope to do some work on the seat suspension. Going to change all the filters and fluids and hope to get it out and put some hours on it. So not really alot wrong but alot of little things that will need some attention sooner of later.
The 3010 is good as new. Talked to the mechanic and he says it is hard to tell what is wrong with those units when you are working on them but they usually get them fixed first time. No idea what the bill on that will be but it was worth it. Tractor is totally different now. This one was leaking internally causing the hyd pump to run hard all the time. Taking that thing in and out will try your patience, good luck.

Man I kinda dread taking that darn valve off hoping not to spend a whole lot in it but hay season aint long and I sure cant run with it leaking like a faucet. Good luck with your 4020 and 3010.

dude, i am with you. i love my 2630 like it was flesh and bone.. however, i got mine from a guy here in norcal with wayyy tooo much money on his hands. it had been rebuilt at the dealership, i mean engine, hydraulics, pto, trans, brakes, new rubber, canopy, hydraulic pump and steering. the seat sucked, and it needed some new decals etc. the guy had his own airstrip at his home/ vineyard. i was the first guy to call and had 4, 376.00 and change on me. i called at 5 am. the dude said okay, u owe me 2 thousand more. i figured to pay him 2 or 3 weeks later and pick it up. right? the guy say"s "no, your in love with it, do a few mowing jobs and pay up in 8 weeks or so". I said "yes sir". the vineyard dicided it best to narrow the rows and by all new tractors to fit the new narrow rows so the 2630 was out in the cold and right in my barn. hell, it was like winning the lottery. i love that guy!!jeff.

I had a Cockshutt 30 given to me, needed a valve job and the pto fixed, still not done ,rebuilt the motor, steering gear, pto unit then decided "as long as I'm at it the fenders are a little rough, the paint is poor etc. etc. etc." now I have three parts tractors plus the one I am doing and it is still far from done. And I will never get what I have into it out of it, oh well I feel your pain:<}

You could have gone to an auction, bought a 4020 for $8,000.00 and still spent a ton of money on it. You've got a good deal there.

Well I'm kinda like you. I never had to run junk and I ain't about to start now. When I buy something I spend whatever it takes to get it perfect. But I feel reel good going to field with something that looks good and works good.

You mention that you added the roll bar and I assume canopy. I am looking for one for my '66 4020. May I ask where you found yours, and how much it cost.

Thanks, and good job on your 4020. It looks great.
