old gas varnish in fuel tank

OK folks. Let's hear about your favorite way to get varnish from 5 year old gas out of my gas tank--I have this in my Silver King tank and the Cockshutt 18-28 tank. We're talking a nice coating here.

Lacquer thinner should be able to remove it. A good steam jenny should remove it too. It will take off that cosmolene so it should remove the varnish. Hal

I used a can of the pour in the tank carb cleaner on a small engine gas tank. Just filled it up, put the cap on and left it for a couple days. I was surprised that it dissolved all the old gas crud in there. I have also used sulfuric acid to remove rust and build up in old gas tanks and carbs. The acid works in just a few minutes and does an excellent job.

Acetone has my vote--I have used it several times. Fast and dangerous! Must be cautious.

I would pour some old carb. cleaner into it and let it sit a day or so and rotate it if needed. I have about 5 gal.
You could go buy new but it is expensive.

I know a fellow who used to burn up his old acetone in his gas tank. He'd mix it 1:20 with gas. The acetone was contaminated with what even paint gunk they used it for so he would have to change filters and clean his carb frequently.

Acetone is a super solvent. We use to wash our hand off with it in the day. Keep off the shin and any painted surfaces. Not good around flames.

...the cheaper the better. Takes about four days then pour it on some weeds/bushes. Helps to shake it every day.
