I always use my foot to roll the motor over. My tractor has a lot of compression, and is very hard to do by hand. Always remember never wrap your thum around the crank handle. Stan

Start with keeping all fingers and thumbs on the handle such that none cross the top of the handle (kinda like you were holding water in the palm). Start at the bottom of the crank rotation and turn it CW until compression resistance is felt. reset the crank to be at the bottom, and pull up sharpely 1/2 turn. No more! JimN

My LA is 403 CID and very high compression so it takes a lot to pull it over. For me I found that If I set it up against the compression then rock it over the top it starts pretty easy for me. I don't have the strength to pull it straight up.

First off be shure the crank will release cleanly if the engine does start! Saw one go flying at a show once, not pretty! Also be sure it is in neutral. Be sure the spark is retarded (Set right on the dist and is working right), and stand clear of the handle incase it does kick back. I face the right side of the tractor use my right hand and pull 1/4 turns from 9 oclock to 12 oclock. I have the throttle set just a couple notches up from idle. If the engine likes some choke when starting I do that for 4 pulls with ign off, open choke back up some then turn on ign and crank it the 1/4 turns. NEVER grab the crank with both hands and try to spin it like a starter. If every thing is right with the engine, it will fire up with even gentle pulls. Pulling like a mad man will just wear you out.

I have a neighbor that starts his W30 that way. Never had seen it done before but it looked like a good idea for a heavy engine.
