Spring Tillage

I have a question for you all. I am going to corn on corn this year. I have heard some people say that i will most likely need a soil finisher to get through the trash in the spring and that a normal culivator will just plug up. Last fall I ran a disc ripper over all of my existing corn ground. I was just wondering what your opinions were. Thanks very much

The guy i help uses a field cultivator in the fall then again in the spring. The big thing is what you have for a planter. No till in this area most dont do anything just plant. Again depends on your planter. They had great yeilds in spite of the weird planting weather.

If you have a modern field cultivator, longer more space between rows and shanks you should be okay.If plugging occures try working the field on a slight angle across the way you disk ripped.Mark

Might have to adjust your harrow too, it might ball up there with rootballs and such depending on what kind you have.

This is what we use, and it works fine. We don't have a lot of trash though as we chop ours for silage.

I agree with CumminsMan. If you have any kind of a decent somewhat modern cultivator, it will go thru OK. Might need to fine tune the rear harrow so that you get the desired leveling and it wouldn't plug. Rear rolling baskets wouldn't need the fine tunning. If you have something that is older like Don-WI, better plan on making a first pass with a disk.

The farmer I work for uses a ripper for all his corn acers and just runs it at a slight angle in the fall then runs a cultivator like this over the ground in the spring giong length wise with the field.

We use a conventional ripper and found that our field cultivator doesnt do so well. It clogs up a bunch with stalks and trash so we just use our disk. If you used a disk ripper in the fall and cut your stalks good ull prolly do ok as long as theres not to much trash or the stalks are damp.
