Crank the time machine back to the 60's and fill your yard will 2 grand new car. As I recall when a car hit 60000 miles in that era most would trade cause it was worn out by their thinking? Things change.
Dealer listing in the paper tricked out 4 dr Chev half ton trucks for just under 20 grand by me, not 4wd.
A lot of sleep factor comes with a full size anything. Crown Vic Taxi Cab of course failed to stop for a red light last month and took the pax side of F 150 from behind the pax door to the rear bumper causing the drive shaft to fall out of trans and drop on the road. Other than hack me off by totaling my extra clean ride I shut down the motor, unkooked seat belt, got witness name and address, waited for police three squads, meat wagon, fire truck, police paper work and watch the two roll backs load up and I walked away.
Soooo get in that beer can and save money?

Yesterday at about 11 O'clock when going shopping, I found myself breaking the speed limit. I slower to the 65 speed limit and with in a half a mile all cars in sight (4 or 5)when around me. Must be real important business.

Bet it'll never be for sale here. Specially the 70 mpg diesel.
On another note. Am I the only person that thinks the US manufacturers are having a contest on who can build the ugliest, biggest and most expensive gas guzzler?

The UGLIEST cars aren't the gas guzzlers. They're the electric and hybrids. If they seriously wanted to sell these things, they'd make them look like a normal car,not something off The Jetsons.

Most of what I buy are under $2,000 vehicles. Used they are called.

Friend just got a $500 89 toyota pickup. Solid drivetrain a bit of rust though.
Should be good for 50,000 miles or so for $500.

1060's who made more than $2.00 per hour. That $2000.00 car was expensive.
Those 60's and 70's cars rusted through in 3 yrs and had to be junked in 5-6 yrs. Today the vehicles run for 10yrs and 100,000 miles with just tires, brakes, oil & filter changes. And good for another 100,000 miles yet.

I can't agree with that. The grilles on the new Fords, up and down the line, have got to be the ugliest things since the Pontiac Aztek.

I do the same thing, but start a little higher up the food chain- bought a very nice 9 year old Lincoln Continental 4 years ago for $4,000- had 128,000 miles. Has 190,000 now, minimal costs to date (did have to get spark plugs and tune-up at 135,000- mechanic said they were the original plugs! Try that on your '60's cars, nostalgia buffs. . .), gets 27 MPG on the highway, think I'll try to find another one when this one tanks. We're the guys who are wrecking the economy- won't spring for overpriced new rigs, rather let somebody else suffer the depreciation.

They sure are. SWMBO says they look like chrome plated venetian blinds. She bought one anyway and is happier with the Taurus X than she is with me. I think she likes the seat warmer feature that I can't make happen anymore.

Yea, must be some sort of phallic symbol though I don't know what's so nnalert about fat. Maybe they think their marketing to dim wits that don't think beyond the intimidation value. They forgot most morons are broke.

Ford grills and tail lights have always been ugly....Not to mention their having three different 351's in the same year with no parts interchanging. Not a big Ford fan.

Well since you brought it up ? maybe there is a contest ?

They also must be getting extra points for blind spots. You can't see out of the front, side and rear of these things !

The Chevy HHR has the same problem with the grille. Other than that fugly grille, the HHR is a decent looking car.

Except if you are not real short with that chopped top your head rubs the headliner and you can't see traffic lights unless you are way back from them.

Ugggllllyyyyyy. I'll stick with my 1987 Chevy s-10 with 20mpg highway. Has right around 170,000 miles and some minor rust(Bottum of the drivers side door is shot and there is a hole in the floor). Always starts, runs good, and gets me from point A to point B and back again.

Actually the Cleveland and Modified had parts commonality. Always wondered about the need for 3 351 cu.in. engines myself. The Cleveland was the higher performance of the 3, the Windsor was the screamer, a glorified 289/302. The Modified was a truck engine (torque mabye?).

I am pretty fond of my 2 yr old grand baby and my wife and kids. I am not gonna be out on I-70 going 70 mph and look over to my left and see a semi truck with wheels taller than my car.

If I had my family in that little bugger I would feel like a bug ready to be squashed.

I will keep the Chevy 4 door, 4wd pickup and when I see one of these little cars I will look "down" I dont give a rats behind what gas costs as long as my family is safe. Also, I dont think I could fit a chain saw, fence posts, roll of wire, gas, generator, deer stand, or other assorted stuff in there

Bill,
Ever done any big city driving, lots of lone soccer moms in their BIG SUVs, lots of guys in a suit in 4wd p/us, you think they will change?

The Tata isn't much of a car, but it is quite an upgrade for most families there. I was just in India last month, and this guy passed me on his 125cc Honda. This is the most on a motorcycle I have seen. A Typical family will have dad driving, a 4 year old sitting on the tank, mom sitting sidesaddle, holding a 9 month old in one hand and groceries in the other hand. I am totally serious about this. This is why a cheap, crappy car is what is really needed in India.

Those people drink and bath in the most polluted river in the world, breed like cockroaches and somebody thought they needed a car.
Like to see one in the insurance agency crash test.

Fiat may be making 500s in the US with the 35% ownership of Chrysler they are getting. The old Citroen 2cv was about same size and cheap at the time design- couple million made over the years. BMW made a 600cc 4 wheel version of their 3 wheel front door only egg/Isseta model was a 4 seater rear engine -but flat twin. Fiat 126 made in Poland is Eastern Europes cheapy. Maybe bring back King Midget here with a Kohler or Brigges V twin- cheap before EPA and Transportation dept get through with the design. City car class- Yamaha has a golf cart that is sort of street legal in some places- call neighborhood vehicles, cities have to specifically allow them on street-they are the "mopeds" of 4 wheel vehicles. 3 wheel vehicles may be easier to get under price restraints- the Bajaj (sic?) 3 wheeler has made it through California emissions test with a 175cc Kawasaki based engine- is legally a motorcycle, imagine a large Cushman metermaid trike with enclosed cab. Possibilities and old examples exist. RN.

The thing to understand is that the Nano was conceived specifically for the Indian market. There is a huge pent-up demand for inexpensive vehicles as the middle class expands. All those men and women working the call centers in the middle of the night have money to spend, but not a lot. A lot of Indians have never owned any vehicle, not even a scooter.

GM has made some efforts to crack the Indian market, but the US automakers really don't stand a chance. Tata has the Indian market largely wrapped up. Tata is to India what GM, Westinghouse and General Electric are to the US, except in a single company. And Tata is fully capable of building a vehicle that could enter the US market, but their market share is in the developing countries, where expectations for comfort and safety are decidedly less that ours. In fact, a significant amount of engineering on US vehicles is performed by Tata contractors.

Just because the Nano is small doesn't mean it is necessarily unsafe. Understand that the typical cab in India is a three-wheeled rickshaw-like vehicle called an "auto". A collision between an auto and just anything else on the road (including cows) is likely to be fatal for the driver and passengers. But if you can't afford anything else, it's an acceptable risk. A Nano doesn't have to be that tough to be much safer than an "auto". I'm told that a lot of thought went into making the Nano crashworthy. For example, the spare tire is located in the front of the vehicle is such a way that it will crush and absorb energy in an impact.

Consider yourself lucky that you were born in a country with clean water and a low population density. Although it seems we have a decidedly inferior educational system.

The main advantage of a car like that is when you kill yourself in it they can just bury you in it right there beside the road or wherever you end up. A little roadside marker in the denomination of your choice and you're all set. The only thing more I have to say on the subject is: "I wouldn't be seen dead in one."

I'd try one. But did you read down the page a ways;

Corp ask for land to build plant creating 100's, if not 1000's, of jobs.
State takes land and lets Corp start construction.
State decides pesants are not happy and demans more from Corp.
Corp says no deal, packs bags, and leaves.
Pesants ask for land back.
State says no, its ours.

End the end,

Corp lost major investment $$.
Pesants lost land.
State keeps almost 1000 acreas of land and lays blame on Corp.

Sounds a lot like some of the states here. Invite a company in and hold a tax gun to their head. Then blames the company for causing the peoples whoa's when they close up and go somewhere else.

Those pesky libs sure get around........
